- Migrating to the New ProQuest
With the merging of CSA and ProQuest, a new Proquest interface will be available. Beginning July 29, 2011, Scholars Portal will no longer support Illumina which includes CSA databases as well as non-CSA databases (such as Social Sciences Abstracts from Wilson Web and the Thomas Reuters Web of Knowledge). The non-CSA databases will need to revert back to "native interface". Depending on how the databases are linked in the Subject Guides, updating will be required. Doug has prepared some detailed notes, which are appended to the minutes, on the updating that is required for new Proquest interface.
Doug will be updating the ERM (Research Database lists) on July 26, and he will send out an email on the morning of the 26th to inform staff of the changes. He will also write up a brief news item for the Library's homepage to notify our users of the change. If a database subfile needs to be listed separately on the "Research Databases (Journal Articles)" page, let Doug know by July 22nd.
- NetLibrary to EBSCOhost migration:
NetLibrary migration to EBSCOhost will take place on July 18. Christine will prepare an alert that will communicate to our users that their account information will not migrate. Items saved prior to the transition will not be saved. Information must be saved locally, before the migration takes place.
Ebooks on EBSCOhost will be listed alongside our other EBSCOhost databases. Users will be able to use their My EBSCOhost account to save title lists and notes.
Other new features include an Export to RefWorks and the option to email up to 60 pages in PDF.
Download of an ebook is an option with EBSOChost (and subsequent transfer to a mobile device). But the option is only available to users if the library has turned on the check-out option. Christine will find out if we will do this. A checked-out book is not available to other users during the duration of the loan period, but a user would be able to place a hold on a wanted item. The checked-out item can only be viewed on Adobe Digital Editions, a freely available plug-in that includes DRM (digital rights management).
- NetLibrary to EBSCOhost Migration - Cataloguing
Alison reported on the cataloguing implications on the NetLibrary to EBSCOhost migration.
- There will be a URL to redirect access for the 3,000 titles from NetLibrary to EBSCOhost.
- NetLIbrary has been used as an author added entry, and Charles will be able to do a bulk change to delete the entries.
- Charles will delete the access point from the CoolNet Library Collection.
- Alison will check to see if additional changes are needed when Betty is back on Tuesday.

ProQuest Migration (Handout from Doug Morton – July 15, 2011)
As noted in a recent email Scholars Portal plans to pull the plug on Illumina on July 29, 2011.
If all goes to plan, I hope to make the changes to the ERM (Research Databases lists) on Tuesday July 26. Because of the way that some people have set up their links in their pages some of you will have more work than others.
And yes, this means your user-ed slides will need updating.
First Step:
Scholars Portal had added many non-CSA-Illumina databases to their implementation of Illumina. Any links you have in any of your Subject Guides, web pages to these non-CSA research databases on Illumina will have to revert to the "native interface"; these are usually identified by OSP as XXXX @ Scholars Portal. Any of these links remaining on Aug 1 will be dead links. Frankly, I don't expect too many people to be affected by this section except for the Federated Search at the end, marked with ***, and that you should already be aware of.
By Aug 1:
The following will only be available via WilsonWeb:
- Applied Science & Technology Abstracts
- Art Abstracts
- Book Review Digest
- General Science Abstracts
- Humanities Abstracts
- Reader's Guide Abstracts
- Social Sciences Abstracts
The following will only be available via ProQuest (new or old):
- ABI/Inform Global
- Digital Dissertations (PQDT)
- ProQuest Asian Business
- ProQuest European Business
The following will only be available via Engineering Village:
- Compendex
- Geobase
- INSPEC (including the Archive)
The following will only be available via Ebsco:
- Bibliography of Native North Americans
The following will only be available via Gale
- CPI.Q
- Expanded Academic ASAP
The following will only be available via Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge:
- Arts & Humanities Citation Index
- Science Citation Index Expanded (all subfiles)
- Social Sciences Citation Index
The following will only be available via U of T:
- ITER
The Sage Databases have not been updated since 2005; they are being moved to a part of Scholars Portal where they will be treated more like eJournals than searchable research databases.
- Abstracts in Social Gerontology
- Educational Administration Abstracts
- Family Studies Abstracts
- Public Administration Abstracts
- Human Resources Abstracts
- Urban Studies Abstracts
- Peace Research Abstracts
- Violence and Abuse Abstracts
*** Will no longer exist after July 29 ***
Federated searching of Scholars Portal Illumina – remove the widget
If you want a link or a widget for a very general literature search try Primo Central, Scopus or Web of Science.
Second Step:
At this point in time we can chose when we want to switch from Illumina and the "older ProQuest" to the "new ProQuest"
- As of Jul 1 all of the CSA & ProQuest databases we subscribe to are loaded and running
- It would be preferable to change once rather than twice (SP-Illumina -> new-PQ rather than SP-Illumina -> CSA-Illumina -> new-PQ)
A lot of this depends on how you established your links.
- A. If you used "testtube" links you should be able to relax. (I suggest monitoring the situation and reviewing wording but nothing too strenuous)
The "testtube" links are based on the Research Databases ERM database which Doug will be updating as well as his own web pages.
- B. If, in your LibGuides, you used the "reuse links" process, and the master list is being updated you too should be able to relax. (I suggest monitoring the situation and reviewing wording but nothing too strenuous)
Sorry – I don't know, at this time, who is responsible for the master list.
- C. If you used "Bill's Database titles and URLs List" at
http://testtube.uwaterloo.ca/erm/databases/dblinks2.cfm
and copy-pasted links you will have a bit of work ahead of you.
This will apply to LibGuides or any other webpage you have created.
The new ProQuest links are not in that list yet and will not be until {July 26}. At that point you'll have to work through your guides & web pages and redo the links.
This list is generated from the Research Databases ERM database
- D. Remember, this step will affect links to:
- Illumina on Scholars Portal and / or CSA
- ProQuest
This will not affect links to research databases such as those from:
- Wilson Web - Engineering Village
- Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge - Ebsco or Gale or Ovid or Scopus
- E. At some time in the future this will also affect links to:
- Chadwyck Healy databases (we don't subscribe to those in round 1)
-TStar - Pages of the Past and G&M Canada's Heritage
and ???
Samples:
- If you have a link to
Biological Sciences collection on SP-Illumina
(http://testtube.uwaterloo.ca/Go/index.cfm?resource=14815)
You'll need to monitor it.
- If you have a link to
Biological Sciences collection on CSA-Illumina
(http://www.csa.com/htbin/dbrng.cgi?username=loo&access=loo222&cat=bisci&adv=1)
You'll need to update it.
- If you have a link to Arts & Humanities Citation Index @ Scholars Portal
You'll need to delete it or modify to AHCI at WoS.
- If you have a link to
ABI/Inform @ Scolars Portal on SP Illumina
You'll need to delete it or modify to ABI at PQ.
- If you have a link to
ABI/Inform on ProQuest (old)
You'll need to update it.
- If you have a link to ABI/Inform on ProQuest (old)
You'll need to monitor it.
