- Business Arising:
- Gobi – how is it going so far? – Discussion (Debbie Tytko will be joining us for this part)
A few questions and concerns were raised by various selectors and other library staff. Here are some of the concerns:
- Have not seen a time period that the book deals with eg. 1700-1750. Hopes this will be added.
- The question was raised as to who should do the searching in Gobi. Either way is acceptable. Either the selector does a search, or pass this on to Vera or Connie
- Table of Contents is useful in Gobi, but is there a way to forward this information to the faculty?
- There are not many notifications
- Approvals – there is some overlapping, attention to this is needed.
- When will the need to sign for approvals stop? It should stop within 2 weeks. An e-mail will be sent out. All other approval plans books will continue to come to LAU’s shelves.
- Can the term “Do not reply” be changed to another phrase?
- Can UK/US titles be filtered?
- Use the Note field to identify your specific needs.
Jennifer has collected the questions and will send them to Sylvan for answers. He will be coming back in November to answer further questions.
Rush Orders should still be handled the same as always, not through Gobi. If Gobi was to be used, we would lose our 17% discount.
A couple of issues were raised
- UK slips /US slips – If the UK is available first, and the selector does not or cannot wait for the US one, then the UK will be ordered.
- Paperback /Hardcover – Gobi defaults to ordering paperback (unless specified by selector), and have the option of having the item permabound.
- bx Trial (Doug Morton)
We have a trial until the end of July 2010 Ex Libris’ “recommender service”, bx. This feature appears at the bottom of SFX pop ups (article searches only) with suggestions for additional articles. These articles are generated based on previous views of the fulltext by other researchers OCUL-wide.
Here is a screen capture similar to the one Doug demo-ed:

Benefits and draw backs of this feature were noted, for example, it is efficient for researchers looking for articles on similar topics but the articles generated by bx might be skewed because of the searching habits within OCUL. If researchers rely only on this “recommended” list they might be missing out on other valuable articles.
- G20 Social Media Project (Annie Bélanger)
Most of the ISR Librarians will be participating in this OpenText initiative taking place during the upcoming G20/G8 Summits. The OpenText’s social media interface, which allows for Facebook-style communication, will be made available to summit participants and accredited press.
The librarians’ role is split into 2 phases. In phase 1, which starts the week of June 14, librarians will be identifying/harvesting open access documents that relate to Summit themes. These documents/links will be uploaded to the site’s “communities”. In phase 2, which begins June 22nd, librarians will be staffing an “Ask a Librarian” service available from within the site. We would have 2 hour shifts. Librarians from other institutions (Centre for International Governance Innovation, Western, UofT, and others) will also be staffing the service. Training sessions for librarians have taken place and planning around staffing the service is underway. Annie noted that librarians who staff the “Ask a Librarian” service during non-traditional work hours will be given 2 hours of flextime for every 1 hour worked.
The meeting was adjourned at noon.
