Meeting Minutes
23 January 2008
10:00-11:30 am
DC 1568

Present

Alison Hitchens, Judy McTaggart, Jackie Stapleton (Chair), Margaret Yuen (recorder)

Regrets: Jonathan Sutherland

1. Approval of Minutes of Jan 8th, 2008

Approved with minor changes.

2. Additional Agenda

None.

3. Business Arising

Item 3:

Collections Training – Margaret has updated the Collections section of Nancy Collins schedule.

Item 5:

Spotlights – Margaret has received the electronic file for the CHIP spot light and it will be placed in the Training Manuals and Guides section of the Committee’s web space. She will also request to have the file placed “At the Information Desk” and email Porter and Davis desk staff.

Item7:

Judy reported that the FAQ has been added to Kathleen Oakey’s schedule.

4. New Staff Training

Judy reported that Kathleen is scheduled on the desk beginning February 1st, and she will also start shadowing next week. When Kathleen is shadowing, she will be answering questions along with the scheduled desk staff.

Judy reported that Al Smith is taking the training for Porter. He plans to take the subject training plus a few additional sessions such as e-journals.

5. Spotlights

Knovel - (Jackie): Leeanne or Anne might do this session.

CSA Standards – Jonathan has contacted Doug, and he will do this session after the Web of Science

Springer ebooks - (Jonathan): Access has not been announced as yet. TUG Cataloguing issues are currently being discussed and we need a Scholars Portal URL.

A-Z List - (Alison): Alison has emailed Bill Oldfield regarding doing a session. The e-journals page is fairly stable, but there is no exact date for the pages to go live. It is possible that a session on the workings of the A- Z will be of interest beyond Porter and Davis ISR.

Library pressdisplay - (Margaret): Jane Forgay will be giving the session on February 29th.

Web of Science – (Margaret): Doug has agreed to present the session.

Action: Margaret will ask Doug if he is available for February 15th.

Lexis/Nexis – (Judy): Sandra has agreed.

Action: Judy will confirm a date with Sandra after the session for Web of Science is confirmed.

6. Education Institute

Troubleshooting Techniques for Wireless, February 7th 2:00 – 3:00 p.m: Jonathan has sent an email advertising the session.

7. Start for term FAQ site

Alison asked for feedback from desk staff and received a few suggestions.
The Committee reviewed the suggestion of turning the FAQs into a wiki but decided that this format would not be suitable for ISR Training Committee purposes. A wiki would be more appropriate for the At the Information Desk page which is not part of the ISRT pages. Alison will redesign the FAQ into a single page with section anchors which can be used in training and also as quick reference for people on the desk.

Action: Alison will make the changes.

8. Potential Speakers for Training Retreat

The Committee reviewed several of the descriptions of OLA Super Conference sessions that Jackie had selected.
Action: Alison and Jackie will report back on the sessions that they attend at OLA. Jackie will also email staff to see who will be attending OLA sessions that might be considered for the Retreat.

Jonathan passed along a suggestion for VeloCity, a UW residence which will be launched in September 2008, to promote collaboration and innovation in mobile communications, web and new media.
