Present

1) Approval of minutes October 23, 2008

The minutes were approved with the following changes:

  5) Survey - Information Desk Staff - "The number of responses could have been better, if it had not been done electronically"

 2) Additional agenda

None.

3) Business arising

Pauline Dewan is scheduled for the Reference Desk now.

4) Training New Staff Members - Update

Agnes Kayko

Carol Steele is updating dates for Agnes's subject training on Web Schedule. Agnes is scheduled for shadowing beginning next week.

Kathy Szigeti

Kathy starts December 1st. Connie is to create a blank schedule for her (using Laura Howells schedule as a guide), this will be confirmed with Jennifer Haas.

Leeanne Romane is sitting in on some of the Subject Training for Porter. She will not be on the Reference Desk for the Winter Term.

5) Spotlights

 VeloCity - 25 attended the spotlight. Everyone felt it went well.

 Primo - all the evaluation forms had positive feedback

 CSA Rep - The CSA Rep is coming Thurs Nov. 20th at 10:00 in the Davis Conference Room.

 CRKN - Postponed for now.

6) Survey - Information Desk Staff - Action for Suggested Sessions

     - Electronic Data Service -what tools and resources found there? Sandra Keys to discuss major sources? Judy McTaggart will speak to Sandra Keys.

     - Update on Special Collections - new collections - Judy McTaggart to coordinate date to be determined.

     - Social theory database (Soc. - Tim Ireland) - early February. Alison Hitchens will look into this.

     - E-HRAF (priority 2) - which one is more important - Alison Hitchens will ask Tim Ireland.

     - CRKN (currently being organized) - Susan Routliffe will confirm the session for early January.

      - Differences between CIP, CBCA & Canadian Research Index (to think about)

     - Turnkey Desk (next term) - Carol Steele will look into this for winter term

     - Graphic Service/Copy Center (next term) - Margaret Yuen will look into this for winter. 

Other Suggestions:

add: Chemistry Resources, for example: SciFinder, ScholarsPortal, CRC Handbook for Chemistry & Physics (consider session for later)

7) Report on Articles on Staff Training

Carol Steele reported on: "Flexibility & Feedback: a new approach to ongoing training for reference student assistants" by Chris Neuhaus. - Reference Science Review v.29 #1 (2001) pg. 53-64

Margaret Yuen reported on: "Integrating Informal Professional Development into the work of Reference" by Karla J. Block & Julia A. Kelly in The Reference Librarian,- Harwood Press, no. 72, 2001 pg. 207-217.

8) Tasks to be done

     EI Institute

     Web pages - review/update - Carol Steele will do Linkbot

     Cross Training - Sandra Keys has expressed interest in being trained for the Davis Reference Desk.

9) Around the Table

  Carol Steele - Subject Training Questions - Margaret Yuen will look for a compilation of training questions.
