2. Training
Christina Zoricic is back as a contract librarian; she may require some training.
Meridith Fischer is the new Porter co-op student; she needs no campus orientation training.
Training for co-ops was discussed, what is needed in the future, what is not as important.
Margaret requested feedback from the Porter Librarians regarding the new training approach used in the Winter 2011 semester. Subject librarians had a positive experience since the training provided an opportunity to rethink how to train, identify basics, and also to learn different approaches the co-op students might have discovered.
Kathy M. sent out an e-mail in February regarding comments on training. Davis librarians liked the new approach and thought the modules were very effective and helped the co-op students at the desk. Not everything the librarians anticipated the students would learn was covered. Providing more guidelines as to learning objectives would handle this challenge. The Library has to make sure that the co-op students know the major data bases and how they work.
For the most part the co-op students like the worksheets and the desk shifts went well. Ben felt that the training was intensive; he was trained for the Porter and Davis desks simultaneously. The practice questions from the subject librarians were well targeted, as many of the questions arose at the desk. Recommendations from co-ops will be reviewed and considered. Members of the committee related some of Ben and Collins comments.
Training for booking schedules is needed. Michael Holmes is working on a library wide training session for late summer.
LINC sessions are to be used more for co-ops.
Kathy has compiled a “Subject Specific Oversight Checklist” for the subject specific training leads in each library.
Reminder to librarians to review their desk/chat shifts for early August to make scheduling easier.
