Situating Learning: modeling and coaching at the reference desk

How we model, coach, and explain research has implications for how students learn what we're "teaching" them at the desk. The way we express ourselves can encourage deep learning rather than surface learning, but to do so may require that we de-emphasize the "tool" and emphasize critical thinking.

GIS Hands-On Session
Geographical and Geospatial Awareness
with Eva Dodsworth

1:00 - 3:00 pm
FLEX Lab

Many people don’t think of geographical technology as either Web 2.0 or a social networking tool.  Many also don’t realize that there are more Google Earth users than there are Facebook users.  This session will provide you with an introduction to the many mapping programs that students, faculty and staff are using in their daily lives.  This session will:

  • Describe how GIS technology is being used across disciplines on  campus
  • Solve the mystery of GIS by dabbling with the GIS tools that students and faculty are using
    •  Learn about Google Earth – includes Hands-on exploration
    •  Create several maps using online mapping programs (including Google    Mashups)
    •  Create a map in ArcMap – the GIS program used on campus

Staying Organized and Task Management Tips

Moderator: Jackie Stapleton


3:15 - 4:15 pm
FLEX Lab

Four of your colleagues will share their approaches for staying organized. The strategies range from low tech to high tech. Approaches include effective use of MS Outlook tools, Zero Inbox technique, organizing to reduce stress, multiple project management, organizing your virtual space and how to stay on top of different types of tasks with different timelines and priority levels. Group discussion will follow.
