Lightning Learning Sessions

10:45 - 11:45 am
FLEX Lab

Tailoring the Key Concepts Approach, presented by Kathy MacDonald.
Evidence-based practice is being embraced by numerous health and social science disciplines. One of the most interesting aspects of EBP for those sitting on an information desk is the question formulation structures that have been developed to help clarify and focus the search strategy. PICO (population, intervention, comparison, and outcome) is probably the most well-known. SPICE, PECODR, PESCO, ECLIPSE are other proposed question formulation structures that may help you on the information desk or may inspire you to develop your own subject specific structure.

Quick Polls, presented by Nancy Collins.
Ever wonder what happens to the results from the Quick Poll on the Library’s homepage? Nancy will provide an overview of some of the trends and information that have been gathered from these polls.

Library Terminology on the uW Library Website, by Samantha Wellhauser.
Does the jargon on our library pages help students or confuse them?  Samantha Wellhauser, a practicum student from U of T, is working on a project to analyse the use of library terminology on our website.

GUEST SPEAKER

Millennials: Who are they? How do they use technology?
Randy Oldham, Web Development Librarian, University of Guelph

1:15-2:15
Davis Centre Conference Room

The topic of the Millennials and their use of technology is popular in library literature. But too often, assumptions are made about young people based on broad generalizations which may be unsubstantiated. Randy will discuss the results of a survey completed by students at the University of Guelph, and an analysis of trends since a previous administration of the survey three years ago.

Sorting Out the Messy World of E-books
With Susan Routliffe, Betty Graf, Christine Jewell and Jonathan Sutherland

2:30-3:30
Davis Centre Conference Room

So far the e-book environment is a lot more complicated than the e-journal environment. Organized by the Information Resources Management Committee (IRMC), this session will shed a little light on some things related to e-books. Betty Graf will share tips for searching for e-books using PRIMO and e-book sites. Christine Jewell will give us an inaugural view of the e-Books Guide for uWaterloo Staff, a website created by the IRMC e-books subgroup. Jonathan Sutherland will have samples of e-book readers and devices and will talk about how these work and what you might need to know about them when at an information desk.
