RDA for Public Services Staff 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. |
“RDA – isn’t that Recommended Daily Allowance?” Actually it is Resource, Description and Access, the new cataloguing rules being implemented by Library and Archives Canada, the Library of Congress, and other national libraries. “Cataloguing rules! Those are just for cataloguers, aren’t they?” Not really – changes to the cataloguing rules will affect how you search, find, understand, and navigate the library catalogue! Come and learn about how changes in the rules will affect you and your users and learn about the potential that RDA holds for improving discovery and access. |

The View from the Other Side of the Desk 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. |
In our library we make decisions every day based on what we think is best for our users. But how do our users really experience our services, facilities, and website? What does it feel like to ask a question at our Research Help Desk? What is the experience of locating the Interlibrary loan desk for the first time? How do our library spaces and website communicate or miscommunicate to our users about what they can expect? Of course we strive to be user-centred and client-focused, but how do we ensure that our library truly puts the user first? These are the kinds of questions our User Experience Team at the University of Guelph Library routinely asks ourselves and challenges our colleagues to ask themselves. We will share with you the user research methods that more effectively put ourselves in our users’ shoes. |

Searching for Success: Teachable Moments 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. |
Put your thinking caps on! This interactive session will focus on enhancing our ability to work with the weird and wonderful search strategies that our users bring to us. Five presenters will each introduce one search strategy that he or she was asked to help improve. You will have a chance to comment on how you would improve the user’s search strategy and then the presenter will show how he or she resolved the problems with the strategy. |

Why Everyone Should Have a Researcher ID 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. |
Cornelia and Anne will challenge you to locate all the papers written by Zhongxiang Shen, a former student in ECE who was being proposed for an award based on the impact of his scholarship. Prizes for everyone who gets the correct number. We will illustrate how we found all the articles and what we learned about Chinese names and the Web of Science. This was a reference question at the Davis Info Desk more than once. |
