Objectives

Review current library homepage in terms of degree of accessibility by:

Identify coding problems
Identify navigational nightmares
Focus on clear labeling of categories (what makes sense, what's intuitive under categories, what categories?)
Text size options - small is still legible and buttons/navbars are taken into consideration -- text should not be a non-resizable font if possible or part of an image
Directional markers (e.g. bottom left hand page)
Remove bullets (JAWS)

Apply information when redesigning homepage by:

Ensuring XHTML code is compliant
Navigation is seamless

The overriding concern to make web pages accessible has existed since web pages were first created. This has been particularly the case when, in 2003, the Canadian federal government strongly suggested and expected compliance to specific recommendations. As such, a number of library staff with extended experience in this aspect are working to ensure that the public web pages are WCAG Priority 1 compliant. In terms of our new web project which consists of two parts; a review of the current home page and secondly, a redesign of a new home page, we are pooling our resources to ensure accessibility is built into the structure from the beginning.
