Attendance: Christy Branston, Helena Calogeridis, Rachel Caldwell, Sandra Keys, Esther Millar (facilitator), Dan Sich (recorder), Charles Woods (guest)
Regrets: Marian Davies, Linda Hastings, Bill Oldfield, Marina Wan
- Minutes of Meeting, January 18, 2006
Accepted.
- Business Arising
# 4: Marina’s action is done.
# 5: “Journal articles, etc.” in left navigation has been changed to “Research Databases (Journal Articles).” Wording on 3 lower-level pages (Research Databases search page and two types of Research Databases search results pages) will be changed to “Research Databases.” Action: “etc.” link text needs to be updated.
# 7: Dan will send ELAS URL to Esther (and group) as an example tutorial template.
- Agenda Review
Added Christy’s “New Librarians page” as # 7.
- Library Web domain name (Charles, Esther)
Question was whether or not we should be providing a DNS entry for www.library.uwaterloo.ca (and possibly others, such as lib.uwaterloo.ca and library.uwaterloo.ca (i.e. sans “www”). Downside: there are too many possibilities. We’ve already asked IST to make the DNS entry for www.library.uwaterloo.ca, but should it be extended to these other possibilities? Could doing so lead to unwanted propagation of bad URLs? What adverse effects might this have to Contribute and Dreamweaver, and to personal (tilda) spaces?
Action: LibWebOps will discuss when Charles, Chris and Bill are all around.
- TRELLIS quick search engine on Musagetes homepage (Esther)
Esther has implemented in an SSI. This will permit us to easily make changes across-the-board whenever the quick search engine needs to be updated.
- Ideas from web survey results (Esther, Helena)
Change the main Services page http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/services/index.html as follows:
• Under “Services for…” place categories in a bulleted list
• Add “Quick Links” to the top of the right navigation
Change the Staff & Administration page http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/AboutLibrary/
staff_admin.html as follows:
• Replace the heading “Staff” with “Contacts”
• Move “Key Phone Numbers” to the top of the list
Change “Your Account” to “Your Account (TRELLIS login)” in the right quick links.
Action: Helena will ask Cataloguing to add record to TRELLIS for online version of Oxford English Dictionary (a student had difficulty finding it).
Add “title” tag to all left navigation submenus (same as we did with the left navigation on the home page). (Note: these are different from “alt” tags. Title tags work for mouse-overs/hovers in Firefox..)
Several comments on difficulties in finding things like dictionaries. We suggest changing “Online Reference Shelf” to “Online Reference Shelf (Dictionaries, Standards, etc.)” in the left navigation.
Associated Action: Christy will ask Rachel to re-write “Resources for Research” page text so that the page is easier to browse.
User liked “How Do I” page and wanted it expanded. Helena noted that LINC is planning more improvements to this page. When we review the css files and see how we can make the right navigation more prominent, we hope to be able to highlight “How Do I” as well. Action: Barbara will provide technical support.
Top of Research Databases and E-Journal Titles pages are too busy. More emphasis should be placed upon the alphabetical links. A table of contents could be added.
“Subject Guides” should be added to the right side quick links on the “Resources for Research” page.
- New Librarians’ page (Christy)
Christy highlighted the new Librarians’ page http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/tour/librarians.html. Action: Make this page live. It is up to ISR to determine text to replace “UW Liaison / Specialist Librarians”. Favourite suggestion of LibWebReview was “UW Subject Librarians”.
- Around the Table
Dan reported that the RefWorks link from TRELLIS was coming soon. Wayne Johnston at UG is ironing out some bugs. It’s expected that his work should be finished within the next two weeks.
