Library Web Review Group

Notes for February 15, 2006 Meeting

Porter 428
1:00 pm – 2:45 pm

Attendance: Christy Branston, Rachel Caldwell (Recorder), Helena Calogeridis, Marian Davies, Sandra Keys, Esther Millar, Bill Oldfield, Dan Sich, Marina Wan (chair)

Regrets: Linda Hastings

1) Minutes of Meeting, Feb. 1, 2006

Accepted with minor corrections.

2) Business Arising

Item 6: Esther did everything she was supposed to in regards to revising the wording of specific links and headings on the home page and subsequent web pages. Rachel will clarify with Christy about the re-writing of the "Resources for Research" page.

3) Agenda Review

Add: Floor Plans (Item 8), Audio Conference (Item 9), plus move OLA SuperConference 2006 (Item 10) and Around the Table (Item 11)

4) E-Journals Title Search/ERM Pages

The following was decided regarding the items listed in 2 of Dan’s emails:

5) Scholars Portal Search Box

Dan Sich has created a Scholars Portal search box on a test version of his (math) subject page: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/discipline/math/index2.html.
This search could be customized for other Subject Guides/discipline pages and possibly be delivered via SSI. Dan is still waiting approval of adding this type of search box from Jennifer Haas/Susan Routliffe. There are some concerns regarding the level of support from Scholars Portal.

6) Progress on Tutorial Template

Esther provided the group with an example of a 2-column tutorial template, which included a left navigation menu with primary and secondary links. Co-op student, Mukul created this template. It has been requested that the top header on the template is called “Library Tutorial” (instead of “the Library), and that the search box at the top of the page is removed. A “Library Home” link is included in the left navigation. It was suggested that the top title bar is removed, but it will be kept so that the tutorials still follow the current CLF. More experimenting with this template is needed.

7) Single Question Surveys

Esther brought up that it would be nice if we were able to feature a brief survey/poll question each week/month in the right navigation on the Library’s home page. These polls could be a quick way to get a sense of what our users think about various library services and resources. The ethics involved with this still needs to be examined. Action: Esther will draft an email proposing this poll/survey idea and Dan will pass it to CNAC – perhaps their group would want to handle these polls.

8) Floor Plans

Marian has created, and Bill has mounted, drafts of the floor plans for floors 2-3 and 5-10 in the Porter Library. The plan for the first floor still needs to be created and the Davis Library floor plans are almost finished. Co-ordinates for these plans are not in place yet and Marian may need help with inputting these. These plans will discussed in further detail at our next Lib Web Review meeting. The draft of the Where Is It? search page can be viewed at http://train2.lib.uwaterloo.ca/whereis/uw/.

9) Audio Conference

The next “technology Tuesdays” audio conference (as discussed in Marina’s previous emails to the group) will take place in the afternoon of Tuesday, February 21. The group will not be able to set up the conference call phone in Porter 428 on this date, but it will be investigated if we can do so for the next conference.

10) OLA SuperConference 2006

From what Marina and others have gathered from attending the OLA SuperConference is that we are falling behind with what other academic libraries are offering in terms of communications and technology, such as blogs, the use of MSN Chat, etc. These issues are now respectively being investigated by Lib Web Review Group members, in addition to other library staff.

11) Around the Table

Next Meeting: March 1, 2006

June 23, 2010
