Regrets: Linda Hastings
1) Minutes of Meeting, March 1, 2006
Accepted with corrections.
2) Business Arising
Item 4: Bill reported that Scholar's Portal link was added to "Popular Choice" list on Research Databases page.
Item 7 : Dan still hopes for a response from CNAC.
Marina sent out a notice from WebOps regarding the new UW tutorial template.
3) Agenda Review
Agenda was renumbered as several new items were added.
4) Update of Helpful Information (Connect from Home)
Marina demonstrated the update of Helpful Information under Connect from Home link: Getting to and Pointing to Licensed Resources. A discussion ensued and suggestions were offered. A decision was made to add a quick link to the right navigation bar titled “Make a Link”. A suggestion was made to separate the staff and public web pages but the group chose to update the public web instead.
5) Where is It help
Dan commented on his review of “Where is it” help page (see his email with an attached Word document for mock-up). A discussion ensued on Searching by Facility/Resource drop down menus. It was noted that floor plans are also needed for UML, 1st floor Porter, 1st floor Davis, Musagetes and Optometry libraries. Facilities will be consulted. Action: Marian.
For the call number search, a meaningful, user-friendly description is needed for each call number group. Action: Marian and Helena.
The group looked at WLU’s approach to the library floor plans (http://library.wlu.ca/libinfo/maps/2nd.htm ) and decided that UW should emulate this example. The lack of call number search was observed. Action: Dan and Esther will create a new layout; Bill will work on the behind-the-scenes mechanism.
6) Task table for LibWebReview: proposed changes
Christy created a table in Contribute and linked it to the LibWeb Review group's web site. She will maintain the table for the group for now. The group viewed the sample list and addressed the following issues: organization, assignment of priority, date entry, lack of sort function, and archiving of past actions. It was agreed that a column will be added to indicate priority status, and “decided” will change to “Action”. It was also suggested that a vocabulary be provided for consistent application of terms in the list.
7) Publishers search of E-Journals Tiles page
The group agreed with Dan’s proposal to add Publisher search to the drop down menu at Find E-Journal by option. Action: Bill. This task will also be added to the Task Table. Action: Christy.
8) Research Databases page
The group returned to an earlier discussion about the possible changes to the wording of: “If you have a complete journal article citation, use:
“ on the Research Databases page. It was agreed that the user should be referred to TRELLIS. Final draft is still in progress. Action: Dan.
9) Around the table
Rachel commented on the CCAE Prix D’Excellence (http://www.ccaecanada.org/awards/prix/index.php), which is the annual contest from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education. It has 30 categories, one of which might be of interest to Lib Web Review (Electronic Media – Category 11 – Best Department or Program Site on the WWW). We missed the deadline this year, but this is something Lib Web Review might want to consider for next year since we’ll know where to check for information in advance.
Bill is currently tied up with SFX work, which is of high priority. He is exploring the tool for a wider use for library collections.
Esther mentioned that there is a new look for the news@your library and provided a sneak preview. The new format now includes RSS Feed Option.
Marina reminded the members of tomorrow’s session on Information Ecology taking place in LIB 428 at 3:00 pm.
Next Meeting: March 29, 2006
