STUDENT LIFE 101

Larry Brown's design will be used for the flyer.

Action: Susan A. will forward the committee's suggestions to Larry B.:
- can the vertical sections be made to look like books
- UW lettering inside the L should be larger (perhaps just making
the L larger would work)
- a cyberspace home image should be used instead of the Dana
Porter building image
- clipart images for the people place, study place need to be
inserted
- the URL address should be on the bottom on the front
- the text information should be placed on the back
- statement of design by Larry Brown, User Services, UW Library
can be placed on the back
- place the 40th anniversary symbol on the back

Action: Yulerette G. will work on the text for the back of the flyer.

ORIENTATION BROCHURE

The brochure will be on one 8 1/2" x 14" page folded 3 times. Larry
Brown's design for the Student life flyer will be used as the cover.

Action: Ann N. will pass the changes/modifications on to Cheryl
Kieswetter:
- the tour information should cover the top part of 2 folded
sections and have a box around it
- all evening tour times will be at 6:15 pm
- the 1st Wed. Thurs. and last Fri. tours at UMD will be eliminated
- CD-ROM searching: The Mechanics will not be given
- there will be WWW hands-on sessions offered using IST training
room
- the wording of the Small Group Sessions will be revised
- interesting stats about the Library will be included on the back
- the boxed information about the WATCAT game will read:
1st Year Student WIN, WIN, WIN!
Play the WATCAT* Search and you could win a $50 gift
certificate from the UW Bookstore. Details at the Dana
Porter, Davis Centre and UMD Libraries.

Action: Yulerette G. will work on the Small group session wording.
Action: Anne F. will give the wording for the WWW sessions to Cheryl K.
Action: Ann N. and Yulerette G. will check with Shabiran Rahman and
Wendy Macpherson about giving the International Student
Orientation.
Action: Ann N. will check with Doug Morton about the text and graphics
for the CD-ROM searching: The Basics

WATCAT GAME

The committee really liked the Larry Brown's draft of the cover for the
WATCAT game (to be know as WATCAT Search)

Action: Susan A. will give Larry B. the committee's suggestions for
changes:
Cover
- move "The University of Waterloo Library presents..." up a bit
- decrease by one or two point sizes the text "The Second
Annual WATCAT Search"
- increase the top two balloon sizes and wording
- eliminate the "WATCAT cats," The Prize of a Lifetime: a" and
"No purchase necessary"
- try replacing fifty Dollar with $50 or $50.00 to see how it
looks
The Instructions
- have hanging indents in instructions 4,5,6,7
- no. 4. - capitalize "Hint"
- no. 5 - take out period after answer, add period after "on)."
and ie. should read i.e.,
The Rules
- make the point size smaller for the text under "Rules" and
"Getting Started on WATCAT" (similar to size under "The
Instructions")
- no. 1 should read: "Contest is open to first year undergraduate
or graduate students of the University of Waterloo."
- no. 4. should read "The winner will be determined by random draw
on Monday September 29, 1997."
Getting Started on WATCAT
- eliminate (and PowerMacs)
- at end of 2nd paragraph include: "Follow the instructions on the
screen."
- 3rd paragraph should read: "If you get stuck, ask for help at
the Information Desks. That's what we're there for!"
- add symbol for recycled paper and 97/09 in the bottom corner
OTHER

The last year's vendacard flyer will not be used this year.
There is one change to the Renewal/Hours card: Dana Porter Library
Government Publications hours should be: noon 4:00 pm
A suitable photo to replace last year's picture on the poster wasn't
located. It was decided to use last year's photo.
Some photos were found for the Student Life 101 display.
Action: Ann N. will develop a mockup of the photos for the Student Life
101 display for next meeting and find out costs of the photos.
Ann will also book the display unit for August 11 th.

Next Meeting: June 4, 1997 2:00-3:30 pm Davis Conference

Action: When drafts of orientation items are updated please mail copies
to members so updating communication can be done by e-mail.
