Library Instruction Committee - Staff Only

User Education Committee
December 4, 1998
Minutes

Present: Jane Forgay, Anne Fullerton (chair), Wendy Macpherson (recorder),
Erin Murphy, Ann Naese, Connie Shuttleworth, Melanie Watkins.

1. Jane Forgay introduced a draft text for the program "Finding
Journal Articles Fast". The group developed the descriptions of the two
sessions. Wendy Macpherson will locate a presenter for the CSA based
session in Davis, otherwise Anne Fullerton will present.

2. Anne Fullerton is willing to give a Keeping Current session in
IST. Erin Murphy will assist. The program will include SwetScan and will
be offered once a month and will be aimed at graduate students and
faculty as two hour workshops.

3. We will not be having any of the Using the Web for Research
sessions this winter.

4. Melanie will, in consultation with Anne, put out the agenda prior
to our future meetings.

5. We would like, on UWLib or TUGWeb, to have a button to liink to
UserEd programs. Anne will be attending a TUG meeting in mid-December
and will bring this up.

6. We would like to have a single brochure for the winter term, but
distribute it each month in a different colour. Distribution will include
residences and student eating places. We want to write up material that
might be used by the Gazette, addressing the importance of library skills
for students, to the faculty (Anne will pursue this). Connie will follow
up on the possibilities for advertisements, articles and inserts with
Imprint. Jane will check on campus coffee places, the turnkey desk, grad
club, Career Resources, Counselling Services and offices of First Year
Academic Advisors, to ask whether our Library flyers might be displayed.
Erin will check off-campus sites like Williams, Blue Dog Cafe, and Second
Cup. The Brochure should have a clear header - Library Workshops (Dates)
and the theme Exploring the Library in perhaps a lesser position.

For Faculty, perhaps the information could be turned into the form of a
memorandum.

We could do this as a 2-month brochure - Library Workshops Jan.-Feb. -
then, as plans develop, have another brochure for workshops in March.
(e.g. Anne volunteers to do a CSA session each week in March.

Now we need Linda Hastings to develop the brochure and to book rooms, etc.

7. The Undergraduate Student Information Page prepared by Yulerette
Gordon was much approved and appreciated. Ann Naese will put it into a
permanent Web site, with an appropriate table of contents.

8. Melanie will contact Linda Hastings again about the bubbles for
reserves information that can be attached to TRELLIS workstations.

9. Looking forward to Fall, 1999, we will try to meet soon with Pam
Charbonneau, who is the Federation orientation coordinator, in order to
share library information for federation led tours, and basic library
information for any peer led orientation. Erin will try to contact a Don
that she has previously worked with, who might speak with us about being a
don and how library affairs might be promoted through the residence dons.

10. Jane reports that Matt Oliver is working on a simplified set of
pages modelled on the Web help pages from the University of
Pennsylvania. Our TUG partners have agreed to this. Anne and Jane will
discuss this further with Matt.

11. Our next meeting will be December 10 - THURSDAY - 9:15 - 10:45.
We will review the brochure for Janunary and its distributioon, and plans
for Kiosk displays.
