Minutes

Present: Margaret Aquan-Yuen (chair), Connie Shuttleworth (recorder), Astra Goodhue, Jackie Stapleton, Linda Hastings, Janet Wason,

1. Minutes of Previous Meeting

#3 – Keeping up with your research literature – line 2 should read “sessions will be offered…”

2. Fall Program

Brochure – general design

General design is fine.

If an official name for LT3 has not been selected by the time the fall brochure is published – in cases where LT3 is the session location the brochure will read “Meet at the Porter Information Desk”

In cases where “register in advance” (other than IST) is required the email address provided would be the Library Instruction Committee email address.

Val Huggan’s name will be added to the committee alias to respond and record patron registration.

It was felt that an email address reflecting the committee’s new name “Library Instruction Committee” should be created and replace the usered@library.uwaterloo.ca address.

Action: Linda Hasting will investigate with Charles alternative email addresses that would reflect the committee title “Library Instruction Committee”

Smart Search Techniques

Doug Morton will be doing four demo sessions.

Davis Wednesday September 20 10:30 – 11:30
Thursday October 5 10:30 – 11:30

Porter Thursday September 21 10:30 – 11:30
Thursday October 5 1:30 – 2:30

Keeping Up with Your Research Literature

The session information will change to indicate it is for Faculty and Grads only.
There will be three sessions given in IST - one in October, November and December.
Dates are not firm as yet.

Action: Jackie will give wording and dates/times to Linda when they are available.

Jackie reported that Ann Fullerton will be giving a workshop on “Organising your References” Three workshops will be held in the Davis Conference Room - one in October, November and December.

Action: Jackie will give times and detailed description of workshop to Linda when available.

Finding Journal Articles Fast

Times of sessions are correct. It was felt the wording for this session needed to be changed.

Action: Jackie and Maureen will work on new wording and forward on to Linda.

Getting Journal Articles and Books Not Available at UW Library

Davis - Wednesday, October 11 10:30 – 11:30

International Student Orientation

The description information requires rewriting to better reflect the session content

Action: Janet will rewrite description and give to Linda.

Information for Graduate Students

Hands on session will be held in LT3. Linda has the times to be included in the brochure.
Action: Linda will prepare a separate flyer to be included in the Grad student orientation package.

Action: Maureen will send a copy of the fall brochure to Susan Routliffe when it is near completion.

3. Publications.
Margaret, Melanie, Connie, Susan Routliffe and Mary Stanley meet to look at some publications currently being reviewed and updated by the Library Instruction Committee. The Library hours and Guide to the University of Waterloo Library will now be managed by User Services. They will contact other departments for updates and changes. Mary Stanley is in the process of compiling a list of all library publications.

“You’re in the Library…. Now What” board in Porter

The information is being updated. Linda has done a new map.

4. Updating Web Pages
Margaret needs to keep Library Instruction Committee pages on the staffweb updated. Linda volunteered to take over the Web administration. She requests that minutes be sent to her by email.
On the public side, the Grad pages need to be updated. Linda will upgrade the ‘look’ of the Website.

Action: Before the next meeting everyone should look at the library instruction pages – updating will be discussed.

5. Answering Usered@library.uwaterloo.ca

Margaret will look after replying to email to the usered alias.

6. Vacation Schedule

Please send vacation schedule to Janet Bullock. She will update staffweb calendar of vacations for the committee.

7. Other Business/Around the Table

1. Things to be done:

-Finalise orientation brochure and grad flyer
-Send any information to Linda by noon, Wednesday May 24

2. Jackie and Janet will be working on the fall publication organised by the Library Development Office. It will be an insert in the Imprint and the Gazette outlining library services.

3. Margaret will be away until June 15
