Minutes of the Meeting of February 8, 2001
10:00 am - 11:30 am

Present: Margaret Aquan-Yuen, Jackie Stapleton (Recorder), Erin Murphy, Janet Wason, Maureen McCormack, Connie Shuttleworth, Astra Goodhue, Melanie Watkins

1) Minutes of November 1, 2000: Approved with minor changes.

Minutes of December 6, 2000: Approved with minor changes.

2) Business Arising from minutes of Nov. 1:

It was suggested that the committee’s official acronym be LINC. Margaret will take this to Susan Routliffe.

KIOSK Display:

Workshop Backup

Margaret will take the question of backup instructors for general workshops to the next ISR meeting.

Communications Workshop:

Astra and the ISR training committee are discussing the possibilities of a public speaking workshop for ISR staff responsible for providing instruction.

Room 428/407 redecorating:

The suggestion for making laptops (if purchased) available to both Porter and Davis training rooms was forwarded to Susan Routliffe and Murray Shephard. The redecorating committee has been placed temporarily on hold until the Library budget has been examined.

3) Feedback on Winter Program

4) Information Literacy – ISMC

Jackie and Maureen (ISMC members) provided background on the current discussions in ISMC concerning Information Literacy and the ACRL standards. Margaret and Erin are attending the ISMC discussions on this topic. The Terms of Reference for the Library Instruction Committee are on hold until ISMC has more definitive plans for incorporating Information Literacy into the UW Library’s instructional program.

Melanie questioned User Services role on the Library Instruction Committee once Information Literacy is made more prominent. This will need further discussion closer to the time when the Terms of Reference are being evaluated.

Action: Jackie will send each member the URL for the ACRL Standards on Information Literacy.

5) Thoughts from WILU/Developments in Library Instruction

The discussion focused around ideas for general instruction. Suggestions included:

The next WILU conference is to be held May 16-18, 2001 at Carleton University. Registrations opens March 12, 2001.

Action: Jackie will send an email advertising the upcoming WILU conference to Liaison Librarians

Margaret described an OLA session given by librarians at York University. They demonstrated an online tutorial for ERL databases which is available at http://info.library.yorku.ca/guides/webspirs/index.htm

6) Jackie’s Replacement

There was some concern expressed that the replacement for Jackie during her maternity leave has not yet been determined. Members of the committee recommended that the replacement should be from Davis Library as Jackie is currently the only Davis representative. It was also recommended that this person should have some experience with instruction at UW.

Action: Margaret will bring this up for discussion at the next ISR meeting.

Around the Table

Melanie – The yellow bookmarks for Online Renewal are very popular and more should be made. Margaret and Melanie will look at this in more detail to determine if these bookmarks are the responsibility of the Library Instruction Committee.

Janet – Janet would like to add the following item to the agenda for the next meeting: The creation of a new How To publication dealing with “Writing Essays”

And finally a warm goodbye was given to Jackie and well wishes for her upcoming maternity leave. (Thank you very much everyone)
