Margaret extended a warm welcome to Dan Sich, who will be replacing Jackie during her leave.
1a. Business Arising from the minutes of Feb. 8:
item 2) Susan Routliffe has agreed that the committee’s official acronym be LINC. Margaret will send an e-mail to Library Staff with the information that the Library Instruction Committee, or LINC, can be reached at the e-mail address of instruct@library.
The ISR department agreed in principle that there should be back-up instructors for the general workshops.
item 5) Dan and Erin have expressed interest in attending the WILU conference. Applications for funding should be submitted to Library Office immediately in order to get a response before the registration date of Mar. 12.
Around the Table—the yellow bookmarks for Online Renewal were updated and reprinted in October, 2000. The Library supply has been re-stocked.
While the group agreed there was a need for such publication, the question remains whether it is the Library’s role to provide one.
Subsequent to the meeting : Erin suggested that a category be created in the undergraduate page and the links to essay writing guides added there.
Action : Erin agreed to solicit feedback on the idea of creating this kind of publication from the Writing Clinic and the English Department.
These were removed from the shelves in both Porter and Davis at the end of February because some of the information is incorrect. Rose Koebel is making the corrections. The colour of the updated flyer will change to avoid any confusion with previous versions.
The Publications Committee has asked that all publications older than 3 years be reviewed. LINC decided to retain and update:
Evaluating What You Have Found
How to Find a Book Review
Steps to Effective Research
How to Write a Book Review (Gary Draper will be consulted)
Action: Margaret will consult with Erin and Dan to see which ones they would
be willing to update. Members of ISR will be asked to update any remaining.
The ‘Beginner’s Tool Kit’ will be deleted.
Doug Morton will participate in the March session of “Keeping Up with Your Research Literature Electronically”. Anne Fullerton is willing to be a presenter for subsequent sessions. Although there are no sessions scheduled after the March 13 th one, it is assumed that this program will be offered during the summer.
Action : Erin will discuss this with Anne.
On behalf of the Training Committee, Jane Forgay has requested that a session on this topic be offered to Information Desk Staff in September.
Action: Anne, Doug and Erin will discuss the request and replyto Jane.
Last year, the ‘Student Planner’ advertised the TRELLIS sessions and Library Tours. We will need to decide the dates for sessions for the upcoming Fall term in April.
Action:
We confirmed that a flyer is prepared for the Fall and Winter terms only.
Connie has been the ILL representative for 3 years; she is looking for a replacement amongst the ILL staff.
Erin has been on the Committee for 2 years and will serve for another year.
Margaret mentioned that Melanie will examine the terms of reference (once they are reviewed by ISMC) to determine whether User Services representation continues to be appropriate.
Action : Since the Thursday meeting time is no longer feasible, please send Maureen a list of the times when you are NOT available to meet.
Dan and Janet will develop a display featuring the Web of Science.
Dan will oversee the Grad web pages during Jackie’s absence; Margaret will arrange with Esther for him to have access to the LINC web files.
Margaret announced that at the next meeting we will begin discussing the general programs to be offered during next Fall’s orientation. She will send out an e-mail soliciting ideas from the Selectors.
