Minutes
Present: Margaret Aquan-Yuen (chair), Lenka Cerny, Astra Goodhue, Maureen McCormack, Erin Murphy, Dan Sich, Janet Wason, Jim Winterbottom (recorder)
Welcome: The committee would like to welcome Lenka Cerny as a new member.
- Minutes of Previous Meeting:
- in section 4.3, change ‘timed’ to ‘times’
- Re: section 2.2, ‘How to Write a Research Paper’, Janet reports that a similar primer titled ‘Essays & Reports: a Handbook’ is available for $1 from both the UW bookstore and the Mature Student’s Office. Janet will be receiving a copy of this pamphlet – and Dan will see if the Davis library require copies?
- Re: section 2.3, Dan reports that some of these pamphlets are still circulating.
- Re: section 2.5, the May 30 th training committee session has been postponed.
- Re: section 4.3, Maureen reports that the UW Federation of Student’s student planner has seen a change in personnel. She will try again to send them the times for our library sessions.
3. Additional Agenda:
- no additional agenda to report
- initial proposal for “Find Journal Articles Fast” to have two sessions for Social Sciences and two sessions for Science & Engineering.
- Re: Graduate Sessions, that in order to draw more interest in attending the Graduate sessions, certain questions arise – Do we need to change the program structure? Do classes need to be more interactive? Anne Fullerton has requested feedback from the biology and chemical engineering students on the session structure used in the past, and any decisions to alter program structure should be made by mid-July, if not earlier.
- Re: ‘Organising your References’, Erin and Anne propose that there shouldn’t be separate sessions offered in the use of Reference Manager or Endnote, but rather instructions should be published as webpages and made available for student’s convenience.
- Re: ‘Smart Searching Techniques’, do these still need to be held? Are they any longer relevant? Doug Morton should be approached to see if these are redundant as a result of the ‘Find Journal Articles Fast’ sessions. Perhaps a better understanding of content would give the committee an idea of how to tailor other classes.
- Re: International Students, Janet received a phone call from the International Students Association on April 30 outlining their agenda for new student orientation. How should the 200+ international students entering this Fall be dealt with? Difference in student background makes it difficult to ensure that any one form of instruction will be appropriate for all. Should the initial orientation be an overall session and general library tour, outlining only the most important aspect of the library and its services? Perhaps it can be emphasised that more directed and specific sessions are also available, and any interested students will have the opportunity to attend.
- Display Shelf Near the Elevator (Porter)
- Maureen is now assuming duties to keep the Porter display shelves stocked with current information.
- now that policies regarding this page have been set, webpage details can be finalized. Margaret will be creating this page.
- Library Instruction Committee page (on staff web page) needs to be reviewed.
Meeting adjourned at 11:35am.
