Library Instruction Committee - Staff Only

October 9, 2001
Minutes

Present: Margaret Aquan-Yuen (chair), Dan Sich, Lenka Cerny, Janet Wason, Maureen McCormack, Melanie Watkins (recorder), Jim Winterbottom

Apologies: Samantha Gibbon, Erin Murphy

After a correction in item 10, minutes were approved.

Grad sessions added to item 4

Kiosk to be item 9 and Around the Table to be item 10.

Grad Sessions:

Dan reported that 56 people attended, which is down from last year.

Possible reasons are:

The grads did not receive an email.

There was no package and therefore no flyer.

Thought should be given as to what to do for the grads for the winter term and how better to advertise the program.

A summary of the evaluation, compiled by Rose, was circulated. The sessions were very well received but there were a couple of comments from students wishing to see data bases from their disciplines.

Library Tours:

Melanie reported that 131 participated in tours at both Porter and Davis.

This is down from last year which had 182 attendees.

Margaret noted that there were many students who attended the Student Services tours.

International Students:

Janet reported that there were 60 on each day. Thought should be given to making it a hands-on in the Flexlab for the winter term.

TRELLIS:

Jim reported about 50 in total attended – the evaluation results are being summarized by Rose.

Margaret noted that one of the comments from the evaluations was the suggestion for a reference guide rather than just take away practice examples. It was suggested that more emphasis should be placed on the online ‘Help’.

Finding Journal Articles Fast:

There was a total of about 30 participants

Among the comments expressed was the desire to look at specific databases

Smart Searching Techniques:

Number attended – 32

Dan reported that he adjusted the content for his second session to make it more captivating.

Maureen summarized the process and results of the recent survey done by first year students. Among the ideas generated was to have library tours before the term starts to lessen the intimidating aspect of the library that a lot of new students feel. Maureen suggested that we try this next summer with a small group of undergrads that can be solicited by email.

Margaret had a submission for this week’s issue, but as we need to keep up a presence in this publication, the committee members were asked to generate ideas for the next issue.

We also need to submit articles for the first-year students ‘e-zine’. Janet will check into the possibility of including “Ten top ways to ace your next paper”. Margaret will communicate directly to the First Year Student Life Coordinator, Heather FitzGerald.

Again we are asked to think of topics for future insertions. One idea was the availability of laptop connections. Any other suggestions are welcome.

This will be arranged around November 8 th – Lenka to contact Annette Dandyk

Committee members are asked to think about whether or not we should run some programs for the winter term, and to comment at the next meeting.

It was reported that Linda is starting to work on new material for the kiosks.

The ILL poster could go up again. Melanie will check if there is any topical Circulation information.

Next Meeting: Tuesday November 6 th, 2001 9:30 to 11:00 in Porter 428
