1. Approval of October 9 Minutes
Minor corrections were noted; minutes of October 9 were approved.
an article for the forthcoming issue has been submitted.
(ii) Under item #9, “Kiosk”
-information relating to Library User Services has been recently revised and is available at Porter kiosk.
-an chart detailing e-journal flow charts & processes will be displayed on kiosk before the end of the Fall term.
-Melanie and Margaret will work on a flyer on how to connect to library applications from home – this will be completed in the New Year.
-Samantha noted that the UMD Library has no user information kiosk, and that this might be something to consider.
-no additional agenda.
Statistics from the Fall 2001 class schedule were noted and discussed as follows:
(i) TRELLIS
-in total, a total of 50 students attended the four TRELLIS sessions – this is up from 47 the previous year.
-what could improve the sessions? Extra time? Make sure that the session starts on time? Comments or suggestions from students attending included:
*give an example searching for government publications.
*go over help links on TRELLIS, including such features as setting limits and viewing account information.
(ii) Finding Journal Articles - Fast
-39 in were in attendance for the four sessions offered this Fall, unchanged over the previous year’s sessions.
-there was a general perception that future sessions might try to be more subject specific; otherwise this year’s sessions went well, and it was found that posting a class roster of attendees helped to shape the focus of the sessions (ie. program & level of study, etc.)
(iii) Smart Searching Techniques
-32 were in attendance this year, doubling last year’s count of 16.
-Margaret had feedback from Interlibrary Loan – ILL feels that its services need more emphasis in future workshops.
-Margaret noted that signing up for sessions has the advantage of controlling class sizes.
(i) Graduate Students
-Dan announced that the 2002 graduate sessions are tentatively scheduled for the second week in January, and that exact dates will be confirmed with Jim Parrott and Paul St.Pierre.
-the general approach to the next graduate sessions may include a more interactive teaching/learning approach, as graduate students prefer concentrating on specific databases in their particular field. Jim and Paul will be given past evaluations to help plan these sessions.
-how should the coming sessions be marketed to graduate students? Suggestions were made to find e-mail lists of incoming graduate students, or to send flyers to individual departments to be distributed to grad mail boxes or for inclusion in orientation packages.
(ii) International Students
- Janet announced that sessions for incoming international students would be held on the 3 rd and 4 th of January with the session on the 3 rd designated for undergraduates and the 4 th for graduate students.
- be certain that these sessions do not overlap Dan’s sessions for graduate students in general.
-Janet will check that description in existing international students flyer is still relevant or is in need of revision.
(iii) Keeping Up With Your Research – Electronically
-Erin will be asked to give some possible dates for winter sessions.
(iv) Other Ideas/Sessions
- a flyer from “Untangling the Web” sessions offered by Weber State University presents a model – some LINC members will be in attendance at Jim Parrott’s forthcoming session to get further ideas.
-Linda will be asked to create a web page aimed at advertising the Winter program.
-should an article on roving be included in a future issue of News@Your Library? An article on the availability of laptop drops will be ready by the third week of November for inclusion in the December issue.
Thanks to Lenka for her preparation and planning of the LINC Appreciation Coffee Break to be held on November 7 in the Porter staff lounge.
-a suggestion was made to change the time for LINC committee turnaround from May to the Fall – this is not seen as a good idea, as membership would be changing just when LINC’s busiest programming is in effect. Membership turnaround will continue to be held in May.
-as a member of ISMC, Melanie will monitor any changes in terms of membership into the New Year.
- Dan is to give two sessions for ESL/Math sessions on the 8 th and 9 th, and may require some assistance. Jim W. volunteered.
Next meeting scheduled for December 4.
