Library Instruction Committee - Staff Only

February 5, 2002
Davis Conference Room
9:30 am - 11:00 am
Minutes

Present: Margaret Aquan-Yuen (Chair), Samantha Gibbon, Erin Murphy (Recorder), Dan Sich, Janet Wason, Jim Winterbottom

Absent: Linda Hastings, Maureen McCormack, Melanie Watkins

  1. Approval of Minutes:

Minutes of meeting for December 4, 2001, were approved.

  2. Business Arising from Minutes of December 4th

    Item 6. Library Tours:
Further discussion on this suggestion has been postponed - offer Library tours in the Summer " prior to official term start"

Item 7. Thoughts and ideas about library instruction:

    • Paul St. Pierre will review content about Davis Library and see Linda Hastings about updates for 'virtual library tour'
    • S. Rahman has contacted the appropriate instructor and offered to arrange course specific Library instruction for Psych 101 as required.

  3. Additional Agenda - No additional agenda.

  4. LINC Staff Web

Group reviewed the new LINC staff web page. Some suggestions for changes are noted based on this discussion, and previous comments sent by members of LINC via email.

Side menu for Home Page: Most of these links are not accessible to public; the words "staff only" appear in parentheses.

    • Email from M. Watkins suggested - re-label these menu items; add the word "planning", to make the 'staff only' restrictions less confusing for general public. For example, 'Library Tours' could be 'Library tours, planning'.
    • Another suggestion was to create a separate TOP page for public access, vs. staff access, i.e. users would have to go beyond top page before menus for restricted content would appear. For comparison, see pages for User Services Department in Staffweb http://library/staff/userserv/index.html

It was suggested that a clearer "description of the committee" could be added to publicly accessible pages [Terms of Reference are already available under "About LINC"]

ACTION: M. Aquan-Yuen suggested that committee should review LINC staff web page again sometime in June.

    • If, by that time we have received additional feedback on the role of LINC from ISMC, we can make appropriate updates to pages "About LINC".
    • We may re-evaluate what sections should be restricted to Staff only access, if this seems warranted, due to changes in LINC terms of Reference, or other issues which have been brought to the attention of LINC.

  5. Review of Winter Program

Rose Koebel is compiling data and comments received through evaluation forms used for Winter 2002 programs.

"Keeping Up with Your Research Literature - Electronically"
3 dates were advertised in Fall Brochure; October 11; November 13; December 5.
Only 3 people pre-registered for the Dec 5 session, and the instructors, Paul and Erin, opted to cancel the session. Paul sent an email message those on the registration list to advise them that session had been cancelled, and that the same workshop would be offered in Winter Term.

Erin and Paul taught the first session for Winter term, Jan 24; 18 people attended. Two more sessions are schedule for Winter term:
March 6, 9:30 - 11:30 -- Anne Fullerton and Erin Murphy are booked to teach this session
April 11, 9:30 -11:30 -- Instructors for this session, will be confirmed later. [The following Davis Librarians have indicated they are willing to act as instructors for future sessions of Keeping Up: A. Fullerton; J. Stapleton; J. Winterbottom; P. St. Pierre]

  6. Ideas for News@your Library and E-Zine

Dan suggested, submit an article for News@your Library to highlight these pages from UW Library "Research Guides by Subject"?
ACTION: Dan will draft something for News@your Library and send to group for feedback

Janet suggested it would be worthwhile to promote the new poster - "Trouble getting started with your research paper" [See item 7. Kiosk display] through E-Zine
ACTION: Margaret will send information about who to contact for contributions to E-Zine [http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infosa/firstyear/ ] to Dan & Janet. They will follow up about this.

Question: Are there other examples of UW Library resources or instruction publications tailored to specific groups, which we would want to promote through News@your Library or E-Zine? By way of example Jim Winterbottom, showed a recent issue for a web-based newsletter, which he created to serve information needs of students and faculty in School of Optometry.

  7. Kiosk - ideas for display?

"Working from Home?" should be retained for current display in Porter/ Davis. This provides tips about connecting to UW Library resources from off campus The graphic refers users to this page for further details - "Connect from Home" http://tug.lib.uwaterloo.ca/proxy/

It was suggested that OPT and UMD could use the display information.
ACTION: Margaret will ask Linda Hasting to send a copy of "Working from Home?" Display item to Jim Winterbottom. Sam declined the offer, because UMD is now rethinking their space.

Final copy is ready for this new colour poster - "Trouble getting started with your research paper?" Dan and Janet will add this to Kiosk display in Porter/Davis as soon as possible. Janet noted that the following [2 page?] publication could be included in the same display -- Effective Library Research, Library Guide No. 1.1
Margaret pointed out that this publication [Erin's responsibility] should be updated before being included in kiosk displays. Erin suggested that she could not produce updated version within the next month.
ACTION: Janet will review current version of Library Guide No. 1.1 to see if major changes to content are needed for update. She will consult with Erin to determine whether updated version of Guide 1.1, can be included in Kiosk display, which will feature new poster.

Melanie and Margaret are working on content about "Book delivery services" [TUGbars and ILL] for Kiosk displays in Davis and Porter

  8. UserEd Committee Self-Review

Group discussed this document, which is linked to information "About LINC" in Library Staff-web http://library.uwaterloo.ca/staff/linc/private/postisreview.html

    Comments:

    • Content for this report is dated [December 1999]. Some additional or updated documentation may be required with regard to "review of terms of reference for the Library Instruction Committee" by ISMC?
    • A report following the same format - i.e. addressing the same questions and information covered, in Self-Review - would serve well, if we had to provide draft something to give an overview of roles currently handled by members of LINC, and comparable data about recent objectives and activities of this committee.
    • We do not know when ISMC will begin a focused review of terms of reference for LINC
    • Members of LINC should participate in this review; an updated version of the December 1999 "Self-Review" might prove the best way to provide input, on behalf of the group, to ISMC?
ACTION: Margaret will consult with Susan Routliffe about these questions.
In the event of ISMC launching focused review of terms for LINC, how will members of LINC participate in that review? Would an updated version of "UserEd Committee Self-Review" be useful to members of ISMC? Can Susan indicate in advance, what kinds of data, or documents ISMC will need to complete proposed review of LINC?

  9. OLA Conference (Ontario Library Association)

Dan and Margaret reported on 2 sessions offered at the 2002 Super Conference for OLA [Toronto, January 30 - February 2, 2002]

Dan reported on this presentation by Deborah Wills, Wilfrid Laurier University Library
    "Critical Thinking and Instruction"
Dan thought this was an interesting example of a Library instruction program, which focused on critical thinking skills and using the internet for research. Deborah offers this program 1-2 times/ year at WLU.
See this URL [http://www.wlu.ca/library/critical/] for additional information and examples, which show how the Internet can "function as a rich source of raw material for critical thinking."

Margaret reported on this presentation by Rita Vine, President of Workingfaster.com, Toronto.
"How Can Librarians Help Know-It-All Web Searchers?"
The session addressed this question: "How can libraries reach out to people who already think they know everything there is to know about web search?"
Margaret thought this was one of the more interesting ideas raised by Rita Vine:
In developing information literacy programs, Librarians should try to take advantage of these 'facts' about how people carry out research in the real world
    - Knowledge doesn't sit on bookshelves
    - For answers, people ask peers not experts
    - Who would our users 'ask first' if they needed help with a search to gather information or extend their knowledge? [Typically Librarians and information services staff, are not on the list]
See this URL [http://www.workingfaster.com/ola2002.pdf] for additional details.

  10. Around the Table

Margaret Aquan-Yuen will be away on vacation for several weeks in April and May.

Erin asked about upcoming changes to membership for LINC committee. Margaret confirmed that the 'new year' for those continuing or beginning their term on LINC begins May 1.
These members will continue to serve on LINC after May 1, 2002:

    1. Margaret Aquan-Yuen, (Chair) - Margaret will continue to serve as Chair of LINC for another year, May 2002-2003.
    2. Linda Hastings, Davis Library Office (membership not limited to 2 year term)
    3. Samantha Gibbon, University Map and Design Library (not limited to 2 year term)
    4. Melanie Watkins, User Services Department (not limited to 2 year term)
    5. Dan Sich, Information Services & Resources, Davis (continuing term on LINC)
    6. Janet Wason, Information Services & Resources, Porter (continuing term on LINC)

*These members will NOT continue to serve on LINC after May 1, 2002:

    1. Erin Murphy, Information Services & Resources, Porter (end of 3 year term on LINC)
    2. Maureen McCormack, Information Services & Resources, Porter (Maureen will be retiring from the Library effective April/May, 2002)

*Note: Lenka Cerny, representative for Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery, retired in January 2002. Due to the impact of staff turn over in ILL/DD, it is not expected that a representative for that department will serve on LINC. This reduces total size of the committee from 9 to 8 members.

Next Meeting Tuesday, March 5, 9:30 am - 11:00 am, Davis Centre Library Conference Room
