Present: Margaret Aquan-Yuen (chair), Samantha Gibbon, Melanie Watkins, Janet Wason, Dan Sich (recorder), Erin Murphy, Jim Winterbottom, Maureen McCormack
Minutes were passed after minor corrections.
Re. Item 2, Paul will be developing the 'interactive library experience' for high school students, and will be communicating with several groups including LINC.
Re. Item 5, "Keeping Up with your Research - Electronically", the date has been changed from April 11 to the 17th. Erin is taking care of ensuring that publicity is up-to-date. Also, only one person has registered for the March 6th "Keeping Up…". Erin will ask Paul and Jackie if one of them can represent science at tomorrow's session, as Anne is no longer able to attend.
Re. Item 6, Dan drafted an e-zine article "Research guides by subject", which Margaret & Janet edited and forwarded to Heather for e-zine. This article will not be used for News@your Library.
Re. Item 7, the "Book Delivery Services" display is finished. Melanie will show Jim Winterbottom a draft, to see if it is of interest to the OLRC.
Re. Item 8, LINC Self-Review, Margaret has spoken with Susan Routliffe, and it has been decided that we can bypass an update. If ISR requires something, Margaret will quickly pull something together.
Re. Item 10, Around the table, Marian Davies will be replacing Maureen McCormack.
No additional agenda.
Graduate sessions:
No arts, social science, or humanities students attended the graduate student information sessions in January.
A frequent comment from attendees was that they would prefer more of a focus on journal indexes relevant to their specific subject areas of interest.
One student requested more information on CISTI in their evaluation of the session. In future grad sessions, reference will be made to the "Keeping Up with your Research - Electronically" sessions, which cover CISTI Source in greater depth.
International Student Sessions.
Tours were only offered for the undergraduates. We might consider adding a tour to the graduate student version of the session. However, there is a question of balancing the amount of time spent on journal index searching, while still covering such basic concepts as the lay-out of the library, book delivery, etc.
LINC members were asked to give some thought to the conceivable implications of the double cohort. We will wait and see how Paul's work on the 'interactive library experience' for high school students develops. This may give a good indication of an appropriate direction for Library Instruction for these younger students.
Janet will ask Linda if she keeps a schedule of when kiosk displays have been posted. If not, then the creation of such a schedule will be requested. Janet will also inquire as to the existence of a file of past posters & displays.
Margaret will also ask Rose to keep a file of past LINC e-zine and News@your Library article.
Margaret will look at statistics, to see which Fall sessions were most heavily attended in 2001. She'll also ask Jim Parrott if his online session re. finding quality information on the Internet will be ready by late June/July.
Erin asked if Judy McTaggart will be involved with the high school program? Erin will contact Susan Routliffe with this concern. It is felt that Judy does not have the time either to manage such a project or to become involved beyond helping high school Teacher-Librarians learn to use the library. It is felt that it is not LINC's role to become involved in liaising with high schools.
Janet will be providing workshops for users registered with the Office for Persons with Disabilities. The question arose as to whether or not these sessions should appear in our Fall brochure. Janet will contact the Office and see what their take is on the matter.
Next Meeting Tuesday, April 2nd, 10:00-11:30 Davis Centre Library Conference Room.
