Absent: Dan Sich
The Minutes were approved with minor corrections.
Item 4--Ready access to the FLEX Lab during the busy times of the year remains a concern, especially for Liaison Librarians who are constrained by course schedules and have little flexibility when planning instructional sessions.
ACTION: Melanie will discuss this issue with Jane Forgay, the Library’s liaison with LT3, and also the question of whether previously-booked sessions would ever be bumped.
‘Optometry Learning Resource Centre Survey’ was added as number 11.
TOURS--In assessing the Porter and Davis tour offerings, Melanie noted that the addition of 12 tours (the 2 evening sessions and the 3rd week of tours) yielded 47 more participants. The numbers for the evening tours seemed respectable; participation in the evening tours was better at Porter than at Davis.
Preparation for the tours remains time-consuming seemingly for very little participation, and it continues to be difficult to get tour guides. The Committee considered alternatives including:
TRELLIS—The attendance in 2002 remains consistent with that of past years.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS—The low number of participants reflects the International Student Office’s re-structuring of their orientation sessions.
The Evaluation Form results for the ‘TRELLIS’ and ‘Graduate Sessions have been prepared; the results for ‘Find Journal Articles Fast’ and ‘Smart Searching Techniques’ are forthcoming.
It was pointed out that the feedback we receive focuses on the session, but does not suggests ways in which the sessions could be changed or improved.
It is hoped that the TRELLIS sessions for Fall 2003 can be held during the 2nd week of September. This year we had difficulty finding times for the sessions, although we started to book them in April (see April 2 minutes, item 7).
GRADUATE INFORMATION—Dan is making the bookings for the sessions; Paul and Jackie Stapleton will be assisting. This winter the sessions will be held in the Davis Library since most students will be in the sciences, etc. For the Fall 2003 orientation, the organizers will consider holding sessions in both Davis and Porter.
ACTION: Margaret will discuss ways of advertising the winter sessions with Dan, e.g., in Mary Stanley’s newsletter that is directed towards faculty and graduate students.
KEEPING CURRENT—Anne Fullerton, Erin Murphy, Jackie Stapleton and Paul will meet on November 12 to discuss the plans for next term. The suggested session for the Social Sciences and Humanities has been postponed.
The Information Services Management Committee (ISMC), of which Helena and Melanie are members, has been evaluating LINC’s Terms of Reference. A draft of the new Terms of Reference was sent previously to members. It has been suggested that LINC should develop a vision statement to be included in the document.
The new Terms of Reference will be presented at the ISR meeting on November 15, which LINC members are invited to attend.
Marian has sent a draft of the ‘Connect from Home’ display
to Linda Hastings.
The Online-Reference Implementation Group will be meeting soon and
will discuss whether they wish to promote the service on the kiosk.
Jackie is working on a tutorial for using CISTI Source. It will probably be linked to one of LINC’s web pages.
The LINC Library Instruction Appreciation Coffee Break will be held on Thursday, November 14, in the Porter Staff Lounge.
ACTION: Helena, Janet and Tim will re-format LINC’s Staff Web pages after the User Services’ model.
In order to gather feedback on their services and collections, the OLRC has prepared a survey for Optometry Faculty, Students and Staff that will be distributed starting November 8. Tim distributed copies of the survey to LINC members.
Margaret stated that she prepares answers to any question that come to the e-mail instruct@library. If she is unable to do so, she will find someone to take on the responsibility.
She also drew to our attention the comments on the Library instruction program that were made in the Hill report.
