Business Arising
Instructions for notebook computers in the Dana Porter have been completed
by Marian and are in place.
Dan is considering options to eliminate or reduce the overlap between the
Smart Searching Techniques and Finding Journal Articles Fast sessions.
Currently there is still overlap that needs to be examined.
RE #9 from previous agenda: The Winter program was advertised using a new
link from the library home page. This was deemed a success and will be
considered again in the future.
RE #10 from previous agenda: UW TILT link from online instruction has been
completed.
RE #12 from previous agenda: Mounting Evaluation forms to the web. This
material has been sent to Rose. The tour stats are organized according
to the named sessions.

UW Walking tours
The flash demonstration from Linda has been postponed. Linda gave details
on what she is proposing for the new walking tour. It will cover both main
libraries and be built concurrently. When the tours are complete the maintenance
of the Davis pages will be done by Linda, and the Dana Porter pages will
be done by Marian.
The text of the pages will be composed by LINC. It will include floor plans,
and offer several entry points. A wide range of information will be available
ranging from the location of drinking fountains to the call number ranges
of material on shelves.
Paul St. Pierre may have started on a similar tour, and Linda will contact
him.
Melanie will be providing the text for the User Services portion of the
tour.
Linda and the rest of LINC will examine methods of assigning the text for
the rest of the pages to the most appropriate people. There is a suggested
deadline of July. Linda is willing to give a demonstration in her office
of the animation techniques that will be used on the next tour.
Linda will provide a site map for the next LINC meeting.

How Do I?
This project is designed to organize all of the “How do I…” information.
Helen is going to be the coordinator. It is suggested that other university
websites be examined for ideas (such as Queens “Survival Guide”).
It was asked if we needed permission to use these pages, and it was determined
that we do not if we are just providing links to them.
Different formats for the page have been discussed
- Section by section
- Include an index
- Search Engine or pull-down window
Pages are allowed to be located in more than one location. When project
is completed it may be linked directly from the main UW library home page.
One of the first stages for the project will be to compile a list of information
to be included in the project. Pages from the following locations will
be examined:
- Information located under the “Ask a librarian”
- Information from e-reference
- Dan will provide some questions that he gets (non-TRELLIS) questions
- The content of the FAQ pages will be examined, but this project
is not looking to replace it.
After a list of the information to be included has been compiled, it will
need to be classified. Marian, Linda, Helen and Helena will work on this
project. Tim expressed interest in joining them at a later date.
Helen will start compiling a list from material from the reference desk,
different groups, and the e-mail reference group. The master list of information
will be kept by Helen. By the next meeting she will have a list started
and it will be e-mailed to staff for additions.
- LINC Reference review.
The Information on the current LINC page is not correct. There are problems
in various areas. The correct versions will be established and mounted
on the web.
Suggestions for LINC from ISR meeting November 15, 2002..
We do not need to follow suggestions, but they should be considered.
The suggestions (with our discussion) included:
- Teach in the native language of students-our students
require a high TOEFL .
Professors are against this; there are problems with some languages
being offered as opposed to others; other university classes are
not taught in languages other than English; how would we know if
someone is having a hard time; what else can be offered as a safety
net.
- Advertise library instruction program in international
languages.
Laura is to supply us with an article that discusses this problem.
A concern was raised that it would be important to make sure the
sign indicates that the courses would be taught in English.
Janet will contact Darlene Ryan from the international student office.
- Create print guides for Information Desk Staff to explain
search strategies such as isolating search techniques.
There are guides at the desk. Most of the print guides have been
replaced by electronic help guides. The “Smart Searching Technique” is
in print. We are not sure what is being requested. Helena will inquire
into clarification of the problem.
- Modify TILT for a generalized web tutorial.
TILT is a generalized web tutorial.
In looking at the tutorials on the Library web site, it was determined
that annotations for all the different tutorials would be useful.
The authors of the pages will be contacted by e-mail for additions
to this area. It may be useful to link to these tutorials from many
other locations.
-
Around the Table
Helena suggested a “Happy face” campaign, Linda mentioned that
other institutions canvas their staff and students for ideas for their
campaigns. A campus wide appeal for “a winning phrase” will
be considered this year.
-
Review Dates for LINC staff web pages
Helena, Janet and Tim arranged several dates on which to meet and discuss
the LINC staff web pages.
