  1. Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the meeting of September 7th, 2004 were approved.

  2. Business Arising from previous minutes

    None

  3. RefWorks - Sandra

Sandra updated LINC on the RefWorks tutorials, indicating that future sessions will be altered to accommodate time restraints. The tutorials will be offered as an introduction to RefWorks, as opposed to the more detailed sessions that have been recently offered.

Sandra has also proposed the idea of creating a library guide for RefWorks – a document that would provide the essential elements of the tutorials. LINC supports this idea.

  4. UMD Library’s Map Reading workshops - Eva

Eva notified LINC of the general map reading workshops she ran in September. These workshops were offered in the UMD Library, and were open to students across all faculties. They covered basic map reading skills, map finding skills, and GIS data awareness. Due to the high attendance, it was decided that these workshops would be offered at the beginning of each term. Eva inquired about being included in the online listing of Library workshops, as well as publicizing the workshops in the print version.

Action: Helena will confirm with Esther about the timeline of publishing the workshop brochures for the Winter term.

  5. Online Instruction – Helena

Helena pointed out that the Library Instruction Data Form does not allow for statistical recordings for online instruction. Helena suggested that the form be either expanded or replaced with one that permits all instruction formats. Helena stressed the importance of keeping Library Instruction statistics, and commented that due to the failure of recording online instruction, statistics report a drop in sessions when in reality the numbers are much higher. Helena has spoken with Susan Routliffe about this and will be bringing this issue to the next ISR meeting.

Action: Helena will discuss the issue of recording online instruction with members of ISR. She will also send an email out to Systems to ask them about either expanding the form or replacing it all together.

  6. Library Tours – Melanie

Melanie was disappointed to announce that the library tours offered to students during the first four weeks of classes were poorly attended. The first week of the tours were attended fairly well with numbers dwindling to zero for most of the other days offered. Casual staff were trained and hired to provide the tours, and one co-op student, Josh Lovell also participated in the program. Josh wrote a report with suggestions for future success and stated that more publicity would increase the numbers. Melanie agreed that the tours could have been publicized more. LINC discussed the importance of scheduled tours and is hoping for better results next year.
