9:30 am - 11:00 am
Minutes
Present: Helena Calogeridis (chair), Eva Dodsworth, Sandra
Keys (recorder), Melanie Watkins
Regrets: Linda Hastings
- Minutes of Previous Meeting (April 5, 2005)
The minutes were approved.
- Additional Agenda
Eva would like to add a session on GIS to LINC’s fall
schedule. She will send information to Helena and will liaise with LT3
staff if there are is any software needing to be added to the tabletPC’s.
She will probably be bringing her own laptop, but will have to have some
orientation to the FlexLab.
- Business Arising
- Item 4: UMD will be changing their name, so they will not be printing
business cards at this time.
- Item 6: “Helena will examine in-class library instruction
statistics.” Some question about what statistics Helena was
to analyse and the correlations which could be made between LINC
instruction and in-class instruction. It is hoped that we could talk
to the liaison librarians who have conducted in-class instruction
to ascertain how the contact was made and what were faculty expectations,
and from this information, be able to generalize to see how we can
more effectively promote the LINC instruction sessions.
- Item 6: “Helena will discuss online instructional tools with
Susan R.” Helena discussed this matter with Susan, who agreed
that UW-ACE should be promoted/employed, but further discussion revealed
that there could be issues with technical support and sharing amongst
colleagues at other institutions. Further discussion and though needs
to take place, probably after the new Davis ISR Head is in place.
- Helena will contact Linda regarding her action items.
- Library Fall Tours
Questions: Do we do tours? How many? Who is paying?
Based on the statistics (see Melanie’s spreadsheet previously circulated),
it was decided to eliminate all 6:00pm tours and those on Friday afternoon.
For the first two weeks, there will be four tours each day Monday to
Thursday and two tours on Friday. For the third week, there will be four
tours in total – one each in the morning and afternoon of Tuesday
and Thursday.
Action: Melanie will speak to the appropriate staff
regarding the funding issue.
We need better promotion of tours. It was suggested that the student
calendar would be a good place to advertise. Action:
Helena will check into this.
- Fall Orientation Planning
Helena sent out a possible schedule to those previously participating
in the LINC sessions. Additions to the schedule include GIS (see Additional
Agenda above) and Bielstein (Laura Briggs). A couple of other changes
regarding time were suggested. Most people, however, have yet to reply.
Both Linda and Esther will receive information to go into the brochure
from Helena next week. Helena will be booking space shortly.
A registration form with an auto-reply feature with contextual information
is being looked into and should be ready by July. A reminder will also
be sent approximately one week before the event. Action:
Helena will follow up with Linda.
- Viewlets Demonstration
Sandra showed a Qarbon Viewlets demonstration from the Qarbon
website (http://www.qarbon.com/).
She and Christy Branston participated in a workshop in Kingston in April
and had created viewlets in a matter of minutes! Both felt that this
product would be interesting to look into as a means of online instruction/conducting
online tutorials. Michelle Edwards (University of Guelph) has used the
product to create Viewlets for Nesstar (http://tdr.uoguelph.ca/DATA/WKSHPS/VIEWLETS/
tdr_nesstar.htm).
Sandra will be requesting a trial of the Qarbon ViewletBuilder and will
report back.
- New Members
Janet Wason left the committee in March, a bit earlier than
the expiration of her term in May 2005.
Helena sent a message asking for new members. She received two expressions
of interest. Rachel Caldwell will be joining LINC as an “adjunct” until
the end of her contract in December 2005.
