Awaiting approval via email – the minutes from the previous meeting
was not available.
- Business Arising - none
- Welcome Rachel Caldwell
Rachel will be serving as an active member with LINC until her contract
expires in December 2005.
- Laurie Strome to fill-in at LINC meetings for Melanie Watkins
Laurie will temporarily act as a replacement for Melanie due to conflicting
schedules with LINC and the respective Managers meetings. Laurie brings
with her related experience from organizing Library events (e.g., Student
Life 101, Campus Day, etc.).
- RefWorks Library Guide
Sandra Keys has created a draft of a General Library Guide for use of
the bibliographic citation manager program, RefWorks. This guide is
based on the one provided by the University of Guelph Library and is
the first in a series of three guides covering the various features
provided by RefWorks. The first guide will provide the basics for starting
an account and the overall general use of RefWorks. Meanwhile, the
second and third guides in this series will respectively cover the
Write-n-Cite and Exporting Database Info features. Items for LINC to
consider with these guides are workshops, email system, and RefWorks’ place
on the Online Reference Shelf.
ACTION: Members of LINC should get back to Sandra with
revision suggestions pertaining to the current draft of the first RefWorks
Guide.
- Orientation
The Fall Workshop brochure that is currently being distributed is missing
registration information regarding Eva’s GIS data. However, the
registration information is provided online.
Several faculty members have asked for already scheduled LINC sessions
to be switched due to conflicts in their respective schedules.
Most of the instruction information on the LINC page should be available
by the middle of next week.
- Other Projects
On Friday, July 8 (2005), Helena sent out an email to the group regarding “some
new ideas for LINC to ponder”. These previous ideas, plus new additions,
are listed below:
• “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Library – Don’t Panic” – Jim
Parrott has forwarded the idea to LINC regarding a guide/brochure insert providing
helpful information about the Library’s services and resources. ACTION:
Rachel Caldwell will forward some documents that she has written for Library
Communications and Development that may encompass the information needed for
fulfilling Jim’s idea.
• Dan Sich put forward the idea of LINC assembling a general Library Guide
based on a similar guide provided on Humber’s library pages called “Putting
Together an Assignment.”
• International Students Library page (LINC’s incomplete project form
last summer) – Rachel Caldwell will be working on assembling the remainder
of this section.
• At the suggestion of librarian, Erin Murphy, an introductory Library Guide
covering Google Scholar should be created – input from the other ISR liaisons
is needed. This project has been assigned to ISR co-op student, Kevin Manuel.
• RefWorks Library Guide series – see item #6 on today’s agenda.
• ACTION: Sandra Keys will compile a list of LINC sponsored
Library Guides in order to check for currency of info.
- LINC REPORT
By the end of September (2005), LINC needs to submit a report to Jennifer
Haas. (Helena Calogeridis is working on this.)
- Online Tutorials
The creation/style of online tutorials needs to be re-examined, as well
as readdressed with Susan Routliffe. Examples of tutorials include “Using
TRELLIS” and “How to Research Effectively”.
- Email Reminder for Workshops
Although it won’t be in effect this year, the sending of automated
email reminders to library workshop registrants should be considered
so that actual attendance improves.
- Meetings Relevant to LINC
There are two relevant meetings/conferences happening before the end
of this year. The first is happening in Aurora, New York on September
23rd, while the other will take place at the University of Alberta
around Dec. 13th. Meanwhile, Sandra Keys is working on the report for
the Willow conference (held this past spring), and Laura Briggs will
have the report for the LOEX conference. The future locations for Willow
will be: Halifax (2006) and York University (2007).
- Status of Linda Hastings
It is unclear when Linda Hastings will be officially returning to work. ACTION: Helena
will contact library administration regarding this matter.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, October 4, 2005 from 9:30 am to
11:00 am (Davis Lib)
