Minutes

Present:  Rachel Caldwell, Helena Calogeridis (chair), Eva Dodsworth, Sandra Keys (recorder), Laurie Strome

1. Minutes of Previous Meeting

The minutes of the meeting of February 7, 2006 were approved.

2. Business Arising

3. Helena will not stay on as a member of LINC once her term as chair has been completed.

5.a. UW Tutorials: Rachel and Sandra will keep their eyes on the situation as work is being done elsewhere in the Library. Currently, Mukul ?? is working on putting two tutorials (Flow of Information and Assignment Calculator) into the “CISTISource” template. The Flow of Information tutorial will be both modular and interactive. There is a problem with the Assignment Calculator as it requires software which is not currently supported by Library Systems. Marian Davies and Barbara Menich are currently reviewing Quarbon’s ViewletBuilder software.

5.b. UWAce Guidelines: Helena still has to look into this.

4. How Do I? Progress Report

Rachel presented the work that she and Barbara Menich have done to date. They have changed and consolidated some of the entries and category titles and have fixed broken links. She also noted that they had looked at other websites to get an idea of what other Library’s were doing.

Suggestions from the group included:

Rachel will incorporate these suggestions,, make a mockup on the website and then send the link to the Davis Information Desk staff for their input. Laurie will send it to the Circulation staff. Action: Rachel and Laurie

Helena mentioned that she had the list Janet Wason created regarding simple questions asked at the Circulation Desk. Rachel thinks that about 75% of them are currently answered by the page.

Helena will review the Find Library Materials categories and links. Action: Helena

5. BIBL Project

Helena summarized this project as per recent ISR Meeting Minutes: "Barbara and Christy developed an outreach project with sessions outside the Library to promote the Library's services and resources. The project is called B.I.B.L. (Bibliographic Instruction Beyond the Library). Barbara and Christy will be equipped with laptop computers and be located at different points on campus (the Student Life Centre, the square outside the Library, campus club meetings, and computer labs) to educate students about using the Library. They will use a wireless internet connection, printed information packages, and library swag to reach out to the students."

She sent around the proposed information package which will be given out for the group to review.

Discussion followed. Outstanding questions should be directed to Christy or Barbara. It was suggested that closer to the Fall term, if the project is still underway, LINC Library sessions could be advertised. Similarly, if/when the tutorials are available, these could be advertised. Action: ??

6. Call for a New Chair Update

Helena sent out an initial e-mail and a reminder. There have been no takers. Given this non-response, Helena put forth the suggestion that the committee be closed down. Is it needed? How important are these general sessions to the students? Should there be a more concerted effort on course-specific sessions or creating printed and/or web resources. Discussion on this matter followed. There was general agreement that the group members did not want to see the committee fold, but that its mandate and tasks should be reviewed in light of the current situation. Helena will be meeting with Jennifer to discuss.

7. Around the Table

Rachel reported that she will be looking into keeping current via RSS feeds. Sandra mentioned that Laura Briggs had incorporated RSS feeds into the most recent Keep Current Digitally – Multidisciplinary session (January 2006).

Helena showed LINC’s Task Schedule.

Helena reported that the Google Scholar project has been put on hold pending discussion and decisions on Library links.

Rachel and Helena mentioned the International Students Page project. Helena will send information to Rachel for this page. Action: Helena
