LINC minutes are to be distributed to committee as soon as possible after meetings.
3. Additional Agenda Items
Regular meetings will be cancelled during July and August, due to members’ vacation schedules. The next regular meeting will take place at the end of August
LINC members will use the LINC Wiki to communicate to each other throughout July and August.
4. Update/Report Items
4a. WILU 2007 at York University sessions highlighted by Anne:
- Assessment using a Rubric, by LaGuardia Community College
- This session focused on LGCC’s assessment of groups of students as they move through the IL program.
- It also included the design of the Rubric.
- Evolution of skills and resource choices, by the University of Calgary
- This session addressed surveying higher level students to see which skills they retained and which resources they used after completing earlier IL sessions.
- Introduced a survey tool called Get Fast (www.getfast.com)
- Anne liked it better than Survey Monkey
- Needs Assessment of Grad Students, by Western Ontario librarians
- Session detailed how librarians conducted focus groups of faculty and grad students to identify the grad students’ needs
- Follow up included a survey
- Librarians had Grad students select preferred workshop topics from a prescribed list.
- Online workshop demonstration, by librarians at the University of Calgary
- handout of the search path included.
- eLearning and Wiki, from the University of Queens
- Instruction across the Curriculum, by UNLV librarians
- Discussed the Mellon Project at Berkeley
- Money donated to bring faculty, librarians and techs together (as iTeams) to design course
- Discussed Boyer Report
- The need to reinvigorate undergraduate studies at research institutions.
- Info seeking habits of students, by York College in Pennsylvania
- Presenter asked for suggestions of what librarians would like to change in regards to search habits of students
- Discussed that to change these habits the librarians need to challenge students’ preconceived ideas about searching. Once students recognize the need to change ideas the student can them make the changes.
4b. LINC’s “Keeping Up with Information Literacy” page:
- Additional changes need to be made, and once it is finalized it will be advertised.
4c. Online Registration for courses:
- A proposal is being prepared for Jennifer, Sharbiran, and Susan.
5. Decision Items
LINC Wiki
- committee members will evaluate and edit the text on the wiki
(workshop descriptions) for creation of the Library Instruction Brochure.
Action: Editing must be completed, or suggestions for editing must be
sent to Sandra by 3:00 pm on Friday, June 8 th.
- Brochure should include additional information for user to
check the “ Tours and Workshop” section of the library homepage for current
Workshop information. Western’s Grad Student Brochure includes similar instructions.
- Workshop descriptions should include a ‘hands on’ statement when relevant.
- Group agreed to combine Smart Searching and Finding Articles, and to leave
TRELLIS as a separate session
- Sessions to Faculty?
- The university has a New Faculty Orientation, and that liaison librarians have, to date, been responsible for marketing the library to new (and existing) faculty.
- Action: Handout for librarians to give to faculty members (Anne and Sandra).
6. LINC Blog
LINC Blog has been created. Remaining issues before release are:
- Blog is to be made available to all library staff (not just LINC members)
- Wording needs to be changed to reflect this inclusion.
- Users can access blog two ways:
- Create own username and password, and send this info to Rachel so that it can be added to permissions list. (http://blogs.lib.uwaterloo.ca)
- Use the LINC username and password
- Username: linc password: l!nc
- LINC members to begin adding content.
- LINC members should submit suggestions for 1 st article posting to Sandra.
- Info will be posted as it is discovered, not based on a posting schedule.
- The members will work on blog for approximately 6 months before it is opened up to all staff. This will allow for content creation and to see whether we will actually use it.
7. Around the Table
