I. Chair’s Comments
Goals and expectations for LINC and LINC meetings:
- Ensuring time management of LINC meetings.
- Provision of detailed key points for agenda items.
- Discussed the importance of input, participation and feedback from members.
- Aim for a slightly new direction for the teaching of workshops including: no automatic assignment of team teaching (However, instructors can request to team teach if they like) and implementation of lesson plans and learning outcomes as another option for workshops, ideally moving away from reliance on PowerPoint presentations in our library instruction sessions (at the discretion of the instructor).
II. Approval of Minutes of June 3, 2009
Minutes approved.
III. Business Arising
No business arising.
IV. Additional Agenda
Additions to agenda:
(a) ii. Learning outcomes and lesson plans for LINC workshops.
(e) LINC Meetings.
V. Updates/ Reports
a. Workshop descriptions
i. Descriptions are required for each workshop regarding content and objectives as well as a concise summary of what the students will learn by attending the session, in order to prepare new enhanced descriptions.
It was suggested that this will provide a starting point for generating the lesson plans and learning outcomes for each LINC instructional session.
Action: Descriptions have been assigned and will be completed and sent to Nancy by Tuesday July 21st. Descriptions will form a starting point for the creation of lesson plans and learning outcomes. Assignment of the session descriptions is as follows:
- Smart Searching: Kathy
- Introduction to RefWorks: Tim
- New Faculty and Grad Students: Leeanne
- Keep Current in your Field: Laura
- Find Books and More: Kristen (Kathy to provide input as needed)
ii. Lesson plans and learning outcomes (additional item).
General discussion regarding the need for learning outcomes and lesson plans for each of the LINC workshops. Discussion also included the importance of establishing measurable goals for LINC objectives, as well as timelines for achieving stated goals and the need to document their progress.
Decision: Individual LINC members to create a draft of a lesson plan for their assigned workshop (from above) and as a group LINC will provide feedback and editing of each draft at the next meeting.
Actions:
- Finish workshop descriptions and email them to Nancy by July 21st.
- Focus next meeting on the development of lesson plans.
- Each member to examine ACRL standards and Blooms Taxonomy in preparation for the meeting.
- Leeanne will prepare a template for the lesson plan drafts and email it to LINC members.
- LINC members will prepare a draft version of their lesson plan for their assigned workshop.
b. Screen casting project
i. Research Grant: A proposal has been submitted to CTE for a research grant to support a study as part of the screen cast project. The study will explore the use of screen casts and their potential to reach out to students who may not otherwise be able to access instructional workshops. A successful application would significantly enhance the screen cast project.
ii. Storage of Screen casts: Laura has been liaising with WebOps and IST regarding the development of space to store screen cast material. A repository for both finished and unfinished material is envisioned but the plan and its details remain unclear. Leeanne posed the questions “where will users go to access tutorial material” and “where is the point of need”? Potential tutorial locations were discussed as well as links to other pages and subject guides and potential downloading implications for tutorials.
Action: Laura will continue to discuss the tutorials with WebOps and IST re: access, placement, and storage. As the discussion progresses, LINC will need to revisit the issue and decide on a plan for access to the material.
c. UW Library Guides
i. Discussion on adding UW Library Guides to the “online tutorials” page.
The previous library decision to de-emphasize the location of the UW Library Guides on the library website but to maintain links to them through the subject guides was discussed.
It was noted that access to the RefWorks import help instructions (UW Library Guide 1.16) is also available through the RefWorks Help page.
Decision: Continue with the online tutorial page as it is currently.
ii. Discussion on using UW Library Guides as the first target for screen cast tutorials.
Laura suggested starting the screen cast tutorials with “RefWorks Help” to export to select databases/platforms.
Decision: The group agreed to begin the screen cast project by creating tutorials which address importing citations from select databases into RefWorks.
d. Promotions
i. Update on Jumpstart Friday
Jumpstart Friday will take place on September 11, 2009 and will include a variety of topics to prepare students for the start of classes on September 14, 2009. The library will participate and provide a fun introduction to the library and its services which will demonstrate how the library fits into student life and studies. The jumpstart sessions will be organized and conducted by Nancy, Tim, and Eva.
ii. Update on the Writing Centre and Counselling Services collaboration.
The library will partner with the Writing Centre and Counselling Services regarding two workshops for the fall. The workshops are “Academic Referencing” (RefWorks) which will be conducted by Tim and “Academic Research” which does not yet have an instructor. Nancy is requesting a volunteer for this workshop.
Action: Kathy volunteered for the “Academic Research” workshop. Nancy will discuss it further with her and provide information.
e. LINC Meetings
i. Meeting Schedule
Discussion of when to hold the next LINC meeting (beginning or end of August) as well as when to schedule regular meetings, beginning in September.
Decision/Action: Leeanne will look at LINC members “BookIt” accounts to determine and select the optimal week for holding the August meeting. She will then advise members of the selected date. Regular meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month at 10am-11:30am, unless Leeanne receives feedback by Wednesday July 22, 2009 that this isn’t suitable.
ii. Missed Meetings
Group discussion and agreement that it is difficult to progress forward with actions/objectives when members miss a meeting and the related agenda items, but request ongoing discussion and input in subsequent meetings, after a decision has been made.
Decision: If a meeting is missed by a LINC member, timely input is welcome but must be provided to Leeanne and/or the LINC group by reviewing the minutes and providing feedback before the next meeting.
VI. Around the Table
a. Peter reported that optometry is considering the creation of subject specific lunch time instructional sessions in the optometry building.
b. Kathy asked if liaison librarians could attend Jumpstart Friday sessions in order to meet new students and introduce them to the role of the librarians. Nancy responded that liaison librarians are welcome to attend and asked that those who would like to do so let her know before the event.
c. Leeanne will be meeting with CTE and the English department to discuss information literacy for the curriculum review.
d. Janet reminded us that the Library scavenger hunt for new incoming students registered with the Office for Persons with Disabilities will be held on Tuesday July 21st and will include a tour and information hunt at both Davis and Porter Libraries. Janet will be organizing and running the event but may require help from staff to assist the students.
