Library Instruction Committee - Staff Only

November 4, 2009
10:00 am - 11:30 am
Dana Porter, Room 407
Minutes

Present: Leeanne Romane (chair), Laura Howell, Janet Wason, Kristen Jensen, Marian Davies, Nancy Collins, Kathy Szigeti, Peter Stirling, Agnes Zientarska-Kayko (recorder).

Janet made a comment that the content of many library web pages still needs to be corrected. She gave some examples i.e. Trace needs to be changed to CTE, Optometry Learning Centre to Witer learning Resource Centre.

Each library page has an owner, and the owner should be notified and make appropriate corrections if needed. If the page doesn’t have the owner, we need to notify WebOps.

Leeanne point out that we are essentially link checkers and that we shouldn’t be responsible for correcting content of web pages.

Kathy had some comments regarding web pages, but she would like to talk about it during next meeting, while we will have computer and internet access.

Marian reported, that Helena asked her to bring up at LINC meeting General Library Guides. In the past General Library Guides were maintained by LINC members. It was proposed, that each librarian could be responsible for one General Subject Guide.

ACTION : Leeanne will take the question to Annie.

Peter will be on leave starting January 2010. Leeanne will look after his LINC page (International Students). Co-op student from Western Library School has been hired to cover Peter’s leave. It was suggested and accepted that the co-op student attend LINC meetings in Peter’s place.

During International Education Week, Nancy will be presenting 4 workshops covering The Big Guide to Living and Working Overseas.

Leeanne confirmed that computers in Flex Lab can be plugged in.

LINC members suggested that it would be very useful to organize Flex Lab orientation before next year orientation. We could also send generic email to all instructors, outlining Flex Lab rules and details before library next instruction sessions.

ACTION : Leeanne will ask Tim if Flex Lab orientation could be arranged.

Laura gave an update screen cast project. Tim, Annie, Kristen, Jessie and Laura are members of the informal group. The group is still working on technical details of the project. Laura will provide updates to LINC, as soon as they have more details. Right now, the group is working on the details where to store the files. Laura mentioned that files will most likely be stored on YouTube.edu. Right now, files are on Kristen’s computer.

Nancy mentioned that UW created educational channel on You Tube and Library will be a subgroup of this channel.

Tim will be presenting spotlight on Camtasia sometime this term.

LINC needs to start planning Winter Instruction Session.

Rose will do all of the booking for LINC instruction sessions this term. Any booking for additional sessions, proposed by instructors, will have to be booked individually by them.

LINC would like to have the workshop schedule finalized by mid-December.

There is an ongoing problem with laptops in Flex Lab.

It was suggested that students should be encouraged to bring their own laptops to general LINC instruction sessions.

ACTION : Leeanne and Nancy will discuss the Flex Lab laptop issues.

Capping the LINC session enrolment:

We are going back to 25 students and 10 on waiting list, because there were issues of too many students attending some sessions (RefWorks and Grad Student Orientation).

If the instructors want to open up the registration to accommodate more students, they can request it.

Peter will be on parental leave next term. For any web page updates and changes please go to Marian.

Marian reported that the new LINC web site is being used, while the old one is going to be archived. We could delete a lot of pages, since many of them are part of new web site. We don’t have to duplicate and archive every page.

ACTION : Marian, Leeanne and Peter will make decision which pages should be archived. Marian will schedule a meeting.

Kathy would like to experiment and explore new free software, but she doesn’t have privileges to download it. Would it be possible to devote 1 computer, where we could download work related new software?

Nancy, Tim and Eva will be presenting “Jumpstart Friday” orientation session at WNY/O ACRL Chapter conference.

Leeanne and Laura taught library instruction sessions to 250 students enrolled at ELAS: English Language for Academic Studies at Conestoga College.
