This year there was a major change in the membership of the Library Instruction Committee (LINC). With six new members joining the committee, we had extensive learning to undertake in order to mount an instructional program similar to those offered in previous years.
Another major change was a redefinition of the tasks that came under the responsibility of the Library Instruction Committee. Under the Draft Terms of Reference prepared in March 2000, the Committee focussed on instructional activities while some public relations activities, previously undertaken by LINC, were transferred to staff members in other departmental units. Participation in Student Life 101, and Campus Day, originally under the responsibility of the Committee, were transferred to other library staff members. Likewise, promotional publications such as bookmarks, Library hours, and Mini Guides were also handed over to departmental units responsible for those service functions.
Information Services Management Committee’s (ISMC) had planned to review LINC’s Terms of Reference, but it was deferred since ISMC has been examining the implementation of Information Literacy at UW. The outcome of the discussions on Information Literacy might have implications on the role of LINC and postponing the review seemed appropriate. A review will be postponed until next year.
We gave 191 workshops or tours to 3,673 participants. Of these, 114 were course-related for 2,639 undergraduates; and 16 were workshops for 468 graduate students. There were 61 general LINC sponsored sessions for 566 participants. The number of participants in the LINC sponsored sessions in 2000/01 is quite favourable compared to previous years.
During the Winter term the following sessions were offered.
Webpages:
The Committee maintained the following webpages for Faculty/Staff; Graduates; and Undergraduates. The Distance Education and Alumni webpages, previously maintained by the Committee, were handed over to staff members with responsibilities for Distance Education students or publicity. In additional, the Committee maintained pages for Tours and Workshop, Online Instruction - Web-based Workshops and Keeping Up with Your Research – Electronically course webpage.
Publications:
The Committee is responsible for developing and updating general non-discipline specific publications, this year these were updated as needed.
Effective Library Research
Evaluating What You have Found
Finding Book Reviews
Finding Periodical Articles
Finding References in the Library
Reading and Writing Scientific and Technical Literature
Promotional:
This year the Committee used the same Fall poster which was developed in the previous year. As in previous years, tours and workshops were advertised in the Gazette, Imprint and uw.general. Several displays were developed for the Kiosk to promote library services and resources. Displays included: Orientation activities, Find Journal Articles, Web of Science, Information of Undergraduates, Information for Graduates, Requests for Books at Guelph and Laurier, and TUGdoc.
Several members of the Committee attended the Workshop in Library Use (WILU) held at the University of Western Ontario in May 2000.
The Committee is currently functioning under the draft version of the Terms of Reference which was drafted in March 2000. Under these terms of reference activities of the Committee were focused more on instructional activities. Participation in Student Life 101, and Campus Day, originally under the responsibility of the Committee, were transferred to other library staff members. Likewise, promotional publications such as bookmarks, Library hours, and Mini Guides were also transferred to staff members in departmental units responsible for those service functions.
ISMC’s review of the Library Instruction Committee has been delayed since ISMC has been examining the implementation of Information Literacy at UW. Since the outcome of the discussions on Information Literacy might have implications on the role of LINC, postponing the review was appropriate. We expect that in the following year LINC would have a clear view of it mandate,
