Review of Notes from January 14, 2003
#1, second sentence: modify it to read: funds will be used to convert LIB
428 into a teaching lab.
#4, first sentence should read: Effective the beginning of this term, the service desk on the first floor will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and also offer hours of service on weekends.
#5, modify third sentence to read: Systems has offered to prepare some guidelines, and target a week during which they would be available to assist staff in accessing the new site.
Ontarians with Disabilities Act
Janet Wason spoke to the group about the new Ontarians with Disabilities Act
and the implications for the Library. The act was phased in:
Janet suggested that Rose Padacz (Office for Persons with Disabilities) be invited to a future meeting to answer any questions, and to develop a greater understanding of the act. Approximately 900 people are registered with the Office with Disabilities at UW.
The goal of the act is to improve opportunities for persons with disabilities
and to provide for their involvement in the identification, removal, and
prevention of barriers to their full participation. The definition of a
disability and a barrier can be found at the Ministry of Citizenship’s
Accessibility Ontario website: http://www.gov.on.ca/citizenship/accessibility/
index.html.
Implications for the University:
Distributing Notes from Joint Managers/LBPC meetings
Susan Routliffe raised the question of whether notes from joint Managers/LBPC
meetings should be distributed to all staff. Discussion ensued and it was
agreed that the notes should be shared with staff.
Draft notes will be distributed to Managers/LBPC by Friday of the same
week the meeting occurred; revisions should be sent to Annette by the following
Wednesday. Annette will make the modifications and email as an attachment
to staff by Friday. Annette will talk to Cheryl about putting the notes
on the web.

UW Coop Students
In mid-January Gary Waller had indicated that the Library would receive Work
Study funding for additional Co-op students placed this term. Two Co-op students
have been hired, one in User Services, the other in Cataloguing.
Lorraine believes that this is an opportunity that may occur again, and that Managers should think about how they could avail themselves of such an opportunity should it arise. Two departments may consider sharing a person if unable to accommodate a full-time (35 hour per week) position.
Possible Co-op job descriptions, and the furnishings and computing requirements
will receive further discussion at the April 8th meeting.
Action: All
news@yourlibrary
An issue is scheduled for release in the next week, and will include:
Managers of the Co-op students should prepare a brief statement and send it to Mary Stanley.
Mary asked committee members to submit potential topics for future issues to her. Suggested inclusions: the new image on public computers, an update from the Information Commons Design Team and its work with Carolyn McGregor, GIS Metadata.
Susan R will raise the issue of material for future issues of news@yourlibrary at the next IRMC meeting. The possibility of hiring a co-op student to assist Mary with this type of work was suggested.
Action: Managers in Systems, Cataloguing, and User Services; Susan R
Campaign Update
The campaign is scheduled to go public in November but 65% of funds need to be raised or pledged before the public launch. The Library target is to have half of its funds by then. Much work needs to be done over the next 10 months.
Ketchum Consulting has brought in two additional staff to assist with the campaign. The Library will be able to avail itself of the help of one person for two days per week.
Campus Day
There will be a number of changes in the way Campus Day will happen this year.
Most significantly, it will take place over a two-day period, on March 11
& 12. The Library will not have a booth at the Student Life Centre; instead,
campus tours will come into the Dana Porter Library (will stay on the main
floor). Mary Stanley and Laurie Strome are working on the logistics.
Esther Millar and Paul St-Pierre are preparing a handout that briefly explains
the Library and its services.
There will be a call for volunteers once Mary learns what time the tours will be.
Learning Spaces Event
Mark commented on a Learning Spaces Event scheduled for February 12 in LT3,
comprised of a 1 ½ hour public session with breakout sessions following.
Mark Valenti (www.thesextantgroup.com),
a consultant in academic space planning, will talk on designing innovative
learning spaces.
The next meeting is scheduled for March 11.
