Managers/LBPC January 14, 2003
9:00 a.m., LIB 428
- Review of notes from December 10, 2002
#3 Capital Campaign - the Library has received $50,000 from the Harold Crabtree Foundation; funds will be used to convert LIB 428 into a teaching lab.
#5 SpamAssassin - will be implemented after the TRELLIS update is operating more smoothly.
- New questions in Staff Appraisal Form
This year's version of the staff appraisal form includes six new questions, providing staff an opportunity to provide feedback to their managers. Many managers in the library will not be using the standard appraisal form this year, however, the questions should be addressed during the performance appraisal interview.
Freddie's memo about guidelines pertaining to performance appraisals was distributed. Lorraineasked committee members to identify supervisors in their departments who might benefit from some training in carrying out performance appraisals. Lorraine will plan a formal workshop or hold a meeting with a few people, depending on how many expressions of interest she receives.
- Project Charter for Review of Reference
A comprehensive review of Reference service will be carried out by ISMC. Since reference and information is provided in venues other than ISR, Susan B, Richard, Linda, Jackie, and Mary were also invited to provide input in creating the charter. A project management approach was used to develop the Charter.
Reference review is a large and complex task, and the project is expected to take the better part of a year. The next step will be to meet with the people who provide reference service (ISR, UMD, Special Collections, and Optometry Learning Resource Center).
Susan will modify the draft: add a bullet indicating that it does not include collections; clarify the definition of reference service.
Action: Susan
- User Services Update
Effective the beginning of this term, the service desk on the first floor will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and also offer hours of service on weekends. This has been managed without hiring additional casual staff. The staff has been monitoring the use of the machines, and counting directional and reference questions, and reference questions that are referred to the Information Desk. The data will be analyzed at the end of term to determine whether to continue with the additional service hours.
Jon Morgan's move to UMD has created a vacant position. There are some tasks within the department where the workload is going down, and others where the workload is increasing. Because of these issues, and a staff space shortage in Davis, User Services Managers are considering making the position one with non-traditional hours, perhaps 12:30 to 8:00 p.m. No decision has been made yet. A contract position has been hired to devote 20 hours per week to Annex processing, with the remaining time spent elsewhere in the department.
- myHRinfo/UWdir user id
The myHRinfo web site is now available. Staff must have a valid UWdir account and password to access it. Some people believe that the IST help pages are not very user friendly. Systems has offered to prepare some guidelines, and target a week during which they would be available to assist staff in accessing the new site. The committee agreed that this would be useful.
