  4. Pharmacy Update

    Mark, Susan R, and Richard had a productive and informative meeting with Dr. Jake Thiessen (Director of the School of Pharmacy ) and Hulene Montgomery (Associate Director, Office of Development and Alumni Affairs) on February 10 th. Dr. Thiessen spoke about the collaborative and interdependent relationship between the U of T Pharmacy and UW Pharmacy programs. He does not view UW as a satellite. The UW School of Pharmacy will be distinctive from UT and have a separate vision, but the programs will be complementary.

    Dr. Thiessen recognizes the importance of providing a full fledged library with a librarian at the School. He also envisions an historic print collection on early pharmacology as part of the collection. The possibility of collaborative library services with WLU ( School of Social Work ) and/or KPL was raised briefly.

    Dr. Thiessen hopes to get approval of the undergrad core curriculum soon at Senate, and final approval by the Board of Governors in early April. The first students may be enrolled as early as September 2006 although they would attend classes on the UW campus. The goal is to have the building and a full program ready for September 2007.

    Richard is now drafting a document which will include projected start up and ongoing costs for information resources, equipment and furnishings, and staff for a second meeting with Dr. Thiessen within the next two weeks.

  5. 6th Decade Planning

    The next draft will be distributed no later than Monday February 21, for discussion at the February 22nd meeting. The goal is to have it ready for release to staff by March 1.

  6. 3rd Floor Renovation Update

    As announced last February, funding has been received to erect a periodical reading room on the 3rd floor. The job is expected to go to tender mid-March, with construction beginning the week after exams end and completed by mid-August.

    Ductwork needs to be replaced on the entire 3rd floor and is scheduled to be done concurrently with the reading room project. The work will be carried out in four phases – the duct work will be done first in an area, and then the rest of the construction will be completed in that same area, and so on until all four phases have been done. All staff on the 3rd floor with the possible exception of LT3 will need to be relocated during the time that work is being carried out in their areas.

    Book stacks will be covered in plastic and the collection will be inaccessible to the public while work is underway in that area. Circulation Services staff will retrieve books from the closed off areas.

    Sandra Keys, Chair of the Porter 3rd Floor Renovations Team will send an email about the reading room project. An information session and an opportunity to view samples will be scheduled. A message informing staff about the ductwork and the need to move staff will be sent shortly after.

  7. Update Brochure

    Instead of an annual report, the Library will prepare a smaller and more modest report about the Library’s activities and highlighting accomplishments in 2004 and 2005. The publication is expected to be completed mid to late summer for release in the fall term. The intent is to keep Deans, the Board of Governors, key decision makers on campus, key donors, and members of the external community up to date on Library affairs.

    Many visuals of the newly renovated Davis Centre, the Musagetes Library, and busy spaces in Porter will be included. Three broad themes are being considered for the brochure: research, students, and space. Other content may include:

    • student and faculty testimonials;
    • notes of appreciation that staff and librarians have received;
    • examples of collaborative relationships;
    • highlight that the Library is a campus employer of co-op, OWS, and one of the largest campus employers of casuals;
    • facts – e.g. number of wireless drops and receiving stations;
    • hours of usage/number of hits on those drops;
    • Special Collections resources, gifts, and grants;
    • 24/6 and increase in numbers;
    • Macleans rating and dollars spent on serials;
    • Elsevier back files and greatly increased resources;
    • human interest stories – staff who were UW students and now work here, or several members of the same family who are staff here, and may have children as students.

Next meeting: February 22, 9:30 - 12, Porter; 6th Decade Planning
