  1. Presentation about Sick Leave

At the September 20 Library Managers meeting there was discussion about the Library’s practice of requiring staff to submit a doctor’s note for every absence due to illness when a staff member uses 20 or more sick days in a 12 month period. This led to a decision to invite Linda Brogden and Nellie Gomes to talk about how sick leave is administered across campus.

Linda and Nellie work closely with Managers when handling sick leave matters. Others on the sick leave team may include Glenda Rutledge, the appropriate Staff Relations Coordinator, and contact with: Office for Persons with Disabilities, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), UW Safety Office, Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB), CUPE 793, and Faculty or Staff Associations. As the “health custodians” Nellie and Linda are the only people with access to employee health files. Files are kept in locked cabinets and the information is not shared with anyone.

Generally, the practice on campus is that Nellie and Linda become involved when an individual is absent due to illness after seven to nine sick days. The Library will review our practice and develop new written guidelines.
