  1. Chair’s Remarks
    Recognition and Commendation
There were three recent events, all of which were well attended.

The dedication of the Murray C. Shepherd Learning Lab occurred on November 14. Mark commended among others, Mary Stanley for securing the funding for this project, and Cheryl Kieswetter for organizing the event.

The official opening of the Musagetes Library took place on November 1.

The launch of John English’s book Citizen of the World: The Life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Volume One: 1919-1968 on November 2 was a significant success.

    Updates
Rachel Caldwell is coordinating the Library’s submissions for the OLA library building awards, a competition held every three years. We will enter submissions for the RBC Info Commons, and the Musagetes Library.

Allan Bell will begin early January 2007.

The Institutional Analysis & Planning office has made available the results of the 2006 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The NSSE survey was sent to undergrads in their first year or their graduating year, and asks questions about the degree to which they are engaged in their universities. Questions are divided into five benchmark categories: Level of Academic Challenge, Active and Collaborative Learning, Student Faculty Interaction, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment. The feedback suggests that overall the Library does a good job offering the support students need and that in many cases we do significantly better than our peers. Paper copies will be sent to the Managers. Much of the report is available on the IAP web site http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infoiap/docs/nsse.html

Work is continuing towards meeting the Kresge challenge. Mary acknowledged the many staff who have contributed to the coordination, tagging and other work of the RFID project. The Library recently received a $100,000 gift from the Webster foundation, and $25,000 from the J.P. Bickell Foundation. Both may be used towards meeting our Kresge goal. President Johnston has agreed to match all gifts directed towards the Kresge challenge for up to three years. An announcement will be sent soon.

Mark’s presentation to Senate on November 2 will include updates about the Kresge challenge, the 3M RFID project, the student satisfaction survey, and a variety of budgetary and service matters.

Mark has been invited as Chair of the CARL Copyright committee at a national summit towards a Canadian Digital Information Strategy in early December (CDIS). http://www.collectionscanada.ca/cdis/012033-601-e.html

Copyright – the issues of leadership, legislation, legal matters, and liability are substantive. For example, on campus we need to pay attention to copyright clearance and when it is appropriate to get it. Digital rights management (DRM) is not just a library issue (e.g. UW ACE, course packs,).

  2. Business Arising from November 1
#2 Updates, GIS Librarian - The draft job description for a GIS librarian will be finalized soon and sent to Managers and Librarians for comments next week. The job title will be Geospatial Data Services Librarian.

  3. Update re Sick Leave
The Library continues to work with Linda Brogden on the implementation of the new sick leave procedures. http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/managers/private/

  4. CARL Survey Emerging Services
Following the practice begun last year, Susan R worked with the group to complete this portion of the CARL survey.

  5. Performance Indicators 2006
The University of Waterloo Annual Performance Indicators report for 2006 was presented to the Board of Governors on October 30. Linda distributed copies of the Library section and outlined the work that goes into developing the report and the roles of the Performance Indicators Task Force and the Data Working Group. The full report is available on the Institutional Analysis & Planning web site http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infoiap/

Work on the 2007 report will begin in the early Spring. In preparation for this, a future agenda item for Library Managers will be how to measure and benchmark the 6th decade goals articulated in the introductory paragraph of the Library section of the 2006 PI report.

  6. CARL Statistics
Linda distributed the draft of UW’s responses to the 2005/06 CARL Expenditures, Establishment & Collections and Use, Facilities & Services surveys and highlighted some of the responses. Managers were asked to review the data and refer questions or concerns to Linda by November 24. The deadline for submission of the 2005/06 data is November 30.
