  1. First Aid, Fire Exits
Kevin Stewart, Director of Safety, spoke to the Managers about recent changes to workplace first aid requirements. The changes were made to comply with Workplace Safety and Insurance Board requirements. Revisions include standardized and larger first aid kits with improved contents, and a listing of first aid stations and first aider (staff trained in first aid) locations on a webpage (Safety Office to prepare). As well, two new posters have been distributed across campus. The Fire Exit signs provide emergency evacuation procedures, and the First Aid posters direct people in need of first aid to the main first aid stations.

The public first aid stations in Davis and Porter are located at the Circulation Desks. Posters placed in the stacks direct the public to these two locations. First aid stations are also located in the Davis staff lounge and in Item Prep in Porter. In UML and Musagetes the first aid stations are staffed by the faculties. First aid kits are also located in most departments throughout the Library. First aid stations contain information about WSIB and a list of first aiders, which the kits do not include. First aid stations should be maintained by staff who have received first aid and CPR training; first aid kits may be maintained by staff who have not had training.

Historically Health Services was the first aid station for the public on campus; however, they are closed after hours. The new first aid stations include a list of trained first aiders, and supplies (such as CPR masks, gloves, hand sanitizer) to administer basic first aid until emergency medical services arrive. Having staff provide first aid to the public is a significant change from the current practice of directing people to Health Services. The UW Police are also trained in first aid.

    Other comments from the discussion:
    • Managers should encourage their staff to review the safety manual to heighten their awareness of first aid and other issues.
      http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/manuals/
      safety/safetymanual_web.pdf
    • The Library will send a list of current first aiders and their phone extensions to Kevin Stewart.
    • Anyone administering first aid is doing it in a voluntary capacity, and if uncomfortable with a situation may chose not to do it. He/She would still need to make the 911 call but could leave treatment to an emergency crew. Anyone starting CPR should continue until a replacement arrives or until they are no longer physically able to continue.
    • As long as people administering first aid are working within the parameters of their training, they are covered by the Good Samaritan Act. There is no legal obligation if someone trained in first aid chooses not to start.
    • The first aid poster provides information about how to handle common situations, such as choking, and unconsciousness. The first aid training courses also deal with this. The Telehealth Ontario phone number is on the posters and could also be a source of information in specific situations.

The Safety Office will be sending orientation booklets about safety to all staff and faculty some time in 2007.

  2. Chair’s Remarks
    Recognition and Commendation:
Congratulations to Mandy Wetherup and Vera Starz. Mandy has accepted the Circulation Services Supervisor: Lending position effective December 11 and Vera will begin her Bibliographic Searching/E journals Support secondment on January 2nd.

    Updates:
Allan Bell will begin on January 2, 2007.

Circulation Services - Elsie Freiheit will continue in Circulation Services as a Library Clerk after the completion of the RFID project in the Porter Library. There are two vacancies in Circulation Services. The Evening Supervisor position will be posted today, and Circulation Managers are still determining how best to handle the temporary vacancy resulting from Vera’s secondment in LAU.

Musagetes Library Assistant, 13 month contract – candidates are being interviewed this week.

Davis ISR Librarian, one year contract – the interview team has a short list of candidates and interviews are scheduled for next week.

Porter and Davis ISR - Barbara Menich’s contract has been extended one year. She will split her time between Porter and Davis, providing information desk relief and other support to the departments.

Porter ISR - Richard Bower, a Library Intern from University of Western Ontario will begin an eight month coop work term on January 2.

Geospatial Data Services Librarian – Richard will send the draft to Managers to share with other staff who may be able to give some feedback. The position will likely be posted before Christmas.

  3. Business Arising from November 15
#1 Updates – our submissions for the OLA building awards have been sent in. The deadline was December 1.

#4 CARL Survey - Betty and Linda have decided that for CARL and ARL submissions, the electronic monograph count will only include titles catalogued and in TRELLIS. Attempts to quantify electronic monographs to which we have access but are not yet catalogued will not be made as we would have to retain statistics of items catalogued and received each year in order to increase or decrease the manual counts. Since ratings factors include acquisitions budgets and expenditures for electronic resources, this should have minimal impact.

  4. Update, 50th Anniversary Plans
Susan Mavor reported on some of the plans for next year. Significant dates include:
    • January 11 - Official Launch; this noon hour event for all of the UW community will be held in the PAC.
    • February 21-24 - Grad student conference; Paul Davenport, President of Western will be the keynote speaker. President David Johnston and Mike Lazaridis have also been invited to speak.
    • April 25 – Friends of the Library lecture and book launch; Ken McLaughlin will speak about his new book, tentatively titled Out of the Shadow of Orthodoxy.
    • September 28-30 - Homecoming; an alumni awards dinner is planned for the Friday evening to recognize 50 outstanding alumni. Nomination deadline is December 31.

      Other highlights over the year:
    • There will be four 50th anniversary lotteries with draws occurring in January, April, September, and December. All monies will go the University of Waterloo 50th Anniversary Scholarship Fund. Visit the website for more information. http://www.anniversary.uwaterloo.ca/
      rafflesale.html
    • The anniversary poster will be distributed in the new year.
    • Jane Britton in Special Collections and Rob Decaire (who worked on a contract in Special Collections) created an image bank of digitized photos for use by UW people using the images for 50th anniversary purposes. The Historical Sub-Committee applied to the Steering Committee for partial funding of this project. The image bank can be viewed at: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/discipline/
      SpecColl/imagebank.html
    • Four or five plaques relating to UW history will be placed around campus.

  5. Using ISBN’s to Identify Duplicates
There was discussion about the withdrawal of uplicates in the Annex. Work on this project has been halted until the problem is resolved.

Next meeting: December 20, Davis
