- Promoting Healthy Practices in the Workplace
Linda Brogden spoke about the healthy office kits that were distributed to offices across campus, answered questions, and outlined healthy practices. She left a supply of posters and other literature for anyone wishing it. They are available from the Library office.
- Hand washing is still the most effective way to combat viruses
- The CaviWipes are safe and similar to products available in grocery stores, except that they are a little stronger. They are high-level disinfectants designed to sterilize hard surfaces such as keyboard, phones, door handles, desks, etc. They are not designed as a hand wipe
- Staff on shared desks should clean surfaces once a day (at the end of the day). Staff coming onto the desk or in contact with students may want to use the sanitizing gel or wash their hands
- Use of the CaviWipes and hand sanitizing gel is optional; instructions may change however if a pandemic does occur.
- Chair’s Remarks
- Recognition and Commendation
There were two anniversaries in the Library in October:
Al Smith, Cataloguing, 25 years on October 1
Cornelia Tiba, Circulation Services, 5 years on October 1
- Updates
Mark will give his annual talk to Senate at the November meeting, highlighting the Library’s contribution to the 6th decade report.
The Library Executive Committee has had extensive discussions about staffing and budget issues to determine how best to move forward. An ad hoc Managers meeting to discuss their strategies is planned for Wednesday, October 11.
- Business Arising from September 13
#8. 6th Decade Report (ARL’s LibQual survey) - Shabiran has contacted the Project Coordinator, and conferred with CNAC about whether UW should participate in the 2007 survey. CNAC will not carry out a user satisfaction survey next year as planned but defer until 2008 and then propose to do it annually.
- Collections Space Planning
Managers heard about the space situation in Davis, the Annex, and particularly Porter where the stacks are overflowing and have reached the crisis stage. A variety of steps have already been taken:
Porter
- inadequate space for existing and growing collections was identified as a significant issue in both the Library’s submission to the Sixth Decade Planning process, and the UW Space Needs Review Committee;
- a project to identify duplicates for withdrawal from Porter is in progress;
- developed a Preservation of Last Copy Agreement with Guelph and Laurier;
- contracted the Walter Fedy Partnership to help develop a long-term vision for space use in Porter;
- asked Ann Naese to detail the scope of the problem and suggest options for addressing;
- • asked the Porter liaison librarians to develop strategies for weeding the collection.
Annex
- Hired a consulting firm to advise on options;
- implemented a freeze on sending new items to the Annex in May 2005;
- established a TUG-wide Collection Management Group to identify duplicates for removal and to determine how much space is available.
Several options are being considered. We are also following developments for a regional OCUL storage agreement, but do not anticipate that it will address the local “crisis” in a significant manner.
