  1. Update on Accessibility Plan

Janet Wason joined the meeting to provide an update. The goal of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2001) is to improve opportunities for persons with disabilities and to provide for their involvement in the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to their full participation in the life of the province. The Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the Library’s Accessibility Plan can be viewed on the web: http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Statutes/English/01o32_e.htm#BK3

http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/News/UWLibDocs/access/plan.html

Two points in the Accessibility Plan that need to be kept in mind:
A.1.ii. Formalize the endeavours by including a statement with regards to accessibility in the terms of reference for Library Committees & Task Forces.

A.3.i. Department Heads, & Committee and Task Force Chairs will report on the progress to the University Librarian at the end of each fiscal year for subsequent review at a Library Managers meeting.

Much has been accomplished since the Library’s plan was introduced in 2003.

Ross and Doris Dixon Charitable Foundation Adaptive Technology Fund, 2004

  • Porter Adaptive Technology Centre equipped with colour CCTV/videomagnifier, ergonomic chairs, a 4th computer with adaptive software, 2005-06
  • Davis Library equipped with a colour CCTV/videomagnifier,2007

Student Endowment Fund, 2005-2006 provided partial funding for

  • Large print range-end signs, Porter 3rd floor
  • Upgrade of Porter elevator control panels

Approximately 900 students were registered with the UW Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD) in 2003; however, in 2005-2006 1,395 students were registered with OPD reinforcing the need for accessibility.

Directions 1: Davis – registration stats with OPD show that there are many students with specialized needs in the faculties of AHS, Math, Science and Engineering who are potential Davis Library clients. Current specialized services include an electronically adjustable workstation in the Info Commons and a CCTV/Videomagnifier. Work is underway to determine what the students need, and Janet is a consultant to the Davis Library Renovations Team.

Directions 2: Adaptive software - JAWS screenreader on library laptops?

Networking adaptive software on general library computers?

Janet’s PowerPoint presentation is attached.

  1. Chair’s Remarks

There were three anniversaries in May:
May 1, Leah Haisoch, Porter Circ, 5 years
May 1, Margaret Uhde, Davis Circ, 5 years      May 4, Rose Praymayer, Davis Circ, 20 years

The Communications Librarian job description is still being reviewed.

A Library Assistant position in UML will be posted soon (one of two Library Assistant vacancies in UML).

To meet the 2007-2008 2% budget cut four vacant positions will be released: LAU (former Jalsevac), Cataloguing (former Theimer), Circulation Services (former Miller), and UML (recently vacated by Dodsworth).

The grand opening of the Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is today. Three units - LT3, TRACE and the Learning Resources and Innovation (LRI) office were amalgamated and renamed CTE. Catherine Schryer, former director of TRACE is the CTE director, and Donna Ellis and Liwana Bringelson are associate directors. The new centre will occupy the space where LT3 was. Many details are still uncertain.

  • Some staff from TRACE will be relocated to Porter. Who will be located on the 3rd floor is unclear.
  • The TRACE library collection will be moved to the corridor outside of the former LT3 space. Linda will oversee this project.
  • Allan and Liwana are discussing how the flex lab will be supported.
  • Susan R will serve as the central contact between the Library and CTE for at least the next year.
  • Susan R will have an initial meeting with Catherine Schryer next week to begin discussions about the relationship between CTE and the Library. When she has a sense of what CTE’s needs are she will coordinate with Jennifer, Shabiran, and Allan about how the Library may offer support.
  • Many Liaison Librarians are engaged in UWAce work and are working directly with LT3 Liaisons. Laura Briggs will return to Davis soon and will assume responsibility for another discipline, in addition to Chemistry.

Special Collections – the Friends of the Library event and Ken McLaughlin’s book launch were well attended. Carolyn Dirks began as the University Records Manager yesterday; she will work closely with Special Collections in the future.

Davis ISR – Leeanne Romane has accepted the Liaison Librarian position in Davis ISR effective immediately.

Porter ISR – Shabiran received the results of the LibQual survey on April 30. Individual respondents’ comments can be sorted by Library. A Porter ISR review has just begun – they will look at what they do now and identify what can be done more efficiently or what does not need to done at all. The target date for completion is the end of the year.

Cataloguing - Tuula Canini has begun working on a casual basis with the EEBO collection in Cataloguing. The only Slavic cataloguer will retire by the end of the year, and has started working with Agnes Kayko to bring her up to speed; then Susan Lancsak will be trained so that there are always two people able to work on a language. Cataloguing has starting receiving some items from the weeding project in the Annex; they will be put on a withdrawal bulletin.

Circulation – Wish Leonard will investigate the possibility of implementing fines for overdue ILL materials that are overdue more than one day. UG and WLU already charge for overdue ILL materials. Some students are deliberately keeping Reserves items overdue; Circ Managers will be recommending a substantial increase to fines on overdue Reserve material. A Watcard machine will be installed at the Porter Circulation desk, allowing patrons to pay fines with their Watcards and enabling Circ staff to add money to them. This is another positive result of the RFID system: now that the Circulation Desk has longer hours than Browsers it makes sense to offer Watcard service.

Systems – work will begin on the 2007 Performance indicators report soon. Linda will be looking to Managers for input on ways to measure and benchmark progress on the Library’s 6th decade goals.

Musagetes – Michele just returned from the ARLIS conference. CSA databases are now being linked to ArtStore - of value to many across campus. They should be available soon.

Facilities – the RFID gates are up and running in Davis. Ian will work with Wish and Police Services/Security about how to report incidents. The replacement carpet for the Porter front entrance has arrived and will be installed in the next 2-3 weeks.

Director, Organizational Services – Sharon will be out of the office May 22 – June 5.

Associate UL ITS – Allan reported on his attendance at the EndUser conference. While there was some angst about dissolving the group the purchase by ExLibris has given them a new lease on life. The new company has doubled development resources. Discussions about Primo, a new discovery interface are continuing. The President of ExLibris North America, Don Trajman, will visit Mark and Allan on May 4. An E-Books RFI presentation is scheduled for tomorrow. The final ERM presentation will be held May 8 at WLU.

  1. Business Arising from April 18

There was no business arising.

  1. Basecamp Demo

The Systems Department has begun using Basecamp, a new project management tool. It will be a pilot within Systems and may eventually be made available to others.

The demo was deferred to the next Managers meeting.

Next meetings:    May 30 (Porter), June 20 (Davis), May 16 and June 6 meetings cancelled
