1. a) Chair’s Remarks
• Updates
Mark informed the Library Managers that Bruce Mitchell, one of the top water-management researchers in the world, is this year’s winner of the Massey Medal, named after a former governor general of Canada. He was selected for the award by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. The Massey Medal recognizes outstanding achievement in exploring, developing or describing the country’s geography.b) Around the Table Updates
Mary: The Library has received $14,000 from the Arts Student Endowment Fund for ten study carrels and chairs. Cheryl Kieswetter put the proposal together and worked with Veronica Diaz from Special Collections.
Ann: Circulation Services will be transferring the rest of the selected potential withdrawal items that are still in Porter stacks to shelving in Distance Education. This is to facilitate the continuation of shifting the Porter book stacks. The items will have the same temporary location with the display in OPAC stating: Temporarily shelved at UW Porter retention review. Inquire at the Circulation desk.
Porter Renovations: The renovations are moving along and they have started to drywall. Ann circulated drawings of the colour and shape for signage as well as a mock-up of the plinth which will have a directory, map etc. Ann also circulated
quotations that will appear in various languages on the glass wall by Browsers.Sharon: The Committee to give suggestions to reduce noise in Porter suggested that we designate the 9th and 10th floors as quiet study on the plinth. Library managers agreed to wait for the report before making this decision.
New staff get togethers will provide the opportunity for new staff members, library managers and library executive to meet informally. This could be done throughout the year, depending on the number of new hires. The first get together could take place following the September 17th managers meeting.
Jane: Interviews for the Library School co-op student for ISR are being held today in London. An interview team has been established for hiring the government information/data librarian position.
Betty: Interviews have been completed for the Cataloguing position and they hope to have a decision soon.
2. Business Arising from June 18
There was no business arising.
3. HR Job Description Website
Sharon and Annette have met with Renee Radigan in Human Resources to better understand the parameters of the HR job description website. Annette will be developing common abbreviations (short form of title, department, and if necessary, Porter or Davis) that will be used on this website so that Library staff will easily be able to find their individual job description. Annette will also change the template we are using so that job titles are the way we want them when submitted to Human Resources. Annette will contact managers to ensure we have the correct job descriptions before sending them to Human Resources.
Action: Sharon will send a note to Library staff, closer to the time that Human Resources will be making the changes, to let them know that we are working on this project.
4. UW Identity Task Force Update and Demo
Allan Bell is on the UW Identity Task Force and provided a presentation outlining the work of that group so far. UW’s brand should provide a mirror and influence everything we do and help us achieve our goals. Allan asked for feedback by July 30th on how the brand framework that has been established by the task force works for the Library and for UW.
The general consensus was that the Library was aligned with the directions from the Identity Task Force. It is important that each entity can develop its own character, but with strong association with the master brand for the University.
Action: Allan will invite Library staff to a lunchtime meeting for further discussion.
Next Meeting: August 20, 2008, Davis
