#3 Remembrance Day moment of silence – our patrons appreciated that we respected the two minutes of silence.#4 Workplace Violence and Harassment Awareness Training – initially, anyone employed by uWaterloo, including casual staff, were required to take the online course. Kate Windsor has reconsidered, and will send Alex a Power Point version that casual staff who do not work on the Circulation desk could do. This will be a good option for the people who we normally wouldn’t give an email account.
#6 Casual Staff Practices – Alex, Michele and Richard haven’t yet met.
#7 Around the Table, Exchange Training – Carl’s recent email messages to staff listed some of the resources available for self-guided training. IST still plans to make the move from Bookit to Exchange Calendar on December 10.
3. Express workstations – pilot conclusion
In response to long line ups for computers in Porter and people wanting to access a computer quickly, a pilot with two express workstations was introduced last May. Each computer has a five minute time limit, but the time limit works on a trust/honesty system, i.e. it is not being monitored. Annie proposed ending the pilot and making the two express stations permanent. Of the approximately 100 paper feedback forms received, only seven asked for removal of the express stations. Most users loved them, and some would like to see more. Of 390 online responses, 124 people responded that they often use the computer for 1-5 minutes, while 135 indicated that they use it for over an hour.In response to requests to enforce the five minute time limit, Annie will explore it with Carl. Managers had no concerns with making the express stations permanent. While we could use more express stations during peak busy periods, there are no plans to increase the number at this point.
It was noted that the Graphics outlet rents laptops and ipads on an hourly basis. We may want to promote that to people who need to use a computer for a short time when there are long line ups.
4. AODA Library Working Group
Managers reviewed and provided comments about the draft Terms of Reference that were distributed prior to the meeting. They will be finalized soon and then Annie will schedule the first meeting. This committee is meant to be a working group that will be disbanded when the work is done.
Action: Annie will make the revisions5. Update on Access Copyright Issues
The current Access Copyright licence expires at the end of December, and there is not yet a new one for January 1st. A tariff request was sent by Access Copyright to the Copyright Board this past spring. AUCC is challenging the terms and conditions. In mid August, Access Copyright filed a request that the tariff be interim effective January 1. AUCC is also challenging the interim tariff. Each university will have to make a decision. A group consisting of Geoff McBoyle, Bruce Mitchell, Lois Claxton, Bud Walker, May Yan, Susan M, Susan R, and Mark met last week to consider uWaterloo’s options. The decision will effect the entire campus.
Bill C32, the new copyright legislation has had 2nd reading in Parliament. A standing committee to review the bill has been established.
6. Around the Table Updates
Mary
Managers viewed and enjoyed the short videos created by Esther Millar promoting the button campaign.Mary is developing a report about library promotional materials and giveaways that would be given for everything from surveys, to displays and in classes. In the meantime, she became aware that Circulation is in dire need of plastic bags. She also learned that Laurier has a new bag that is being sold for $2 a piece at the library service desks. We will have a number produced; some will be sold at the Circ desks and some will be used as giveaways.
