A number of uWaterloo Library staff have been involved in OCUL activities/committees:
• Jennifer Haas – OCUL IR (also Annie and Susan R). Christine and Jane will fill in for Annie.
• Jennifer – Access and Discovery Layer Committee.
• Richard Pinnell – OCUL Maps Group; also Technical Standards and Collections working group.
• Eva Dodsworth – Teaching and Learning Working Group; also Geoportal Online.
• Sandra Keys – chair of the DINO Data Committee.
• Betty Graf – a Cataloguing Group has been meeting about e-books.
• Mark – External Advisory Data Committee for OCUL Geospatial Portal project.
• There is going to be an OCUL RFP for a discovery layer. It will be crafted so that all OCUL members can consider it and decide if they want to opt in, if or when one is chosen. Once size does not fit all, so all institutions will not necessarily want the same product. uWaterloo is currently piloting Primo Central; some others use a discovery layer that is different than Primo.
The RFP is primarily aimed at those who don’t have a discovery layer at present.ARL/CARL
• There have been document delivery discussions relating to the report of the ILL Task Force, which Mark was a member of. Alex and Wish Leonard also had some input into the work of that committee. There is currently a lawsuit in the U.S. about e-reserves. It is important to note that the copyright context in the U.S. is very different than that in Canada (note especially fair use in the U.S., and fair dealing in Canada).
• Audio from many of the ARL sessions available online http://bit.ly/kxlCyXMark will attend a series of meetings scheduled for October 3 - 7: CRKN, CARL, CARL Board, and a half day OCUL meeting. Susan R will also attend CRKN.
5. Around the Table Updates
Betty
Circulation and Cataloguing staff have been testing Version 8 Voyager software over the past month, with formal testing wrapping up last week. Many bugs were identified, and some have still not been fixed. It is hoped that the new release of Version 8 will have many of these issues resolved.Alex
OCUL has contracted to purchase Relais Express licenses (print from web software that delivers journal articles to the user’s desktop), along with installation and training. Some issues and costs of ensuring interoperability between Relais Express and RACER will be investigated. TUG wants the interoperability matter resolved before committing to an implementation date.Richard
Key Stats for 2009/10 have been added to the Library’s website. http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/keyinfo/Keystats2009_10.html
Mark asked Richard to pull together the figures from this year and five years ago as a comparator. Of note:
• Print monographs (up 3%)
• E-reserve uses (down 63%): course instructors no longer putting course assignments/solutions on e-reserves, preferring UWAce; more appropriate use of e-reserves
• ILL loans to/from other institutions (down 17% and 11%): TUGdocs activity is down because wider access to electronic packages within TUG (e.g., Elsevier)
• Reference statistics (down 34%): change is more apparent than real--the result of changes to LibQuest categories.
• Turnstile counts, year-long and 1-day counts (up every year since at least 02/03):

On behalf of Pascal, Jennifer mentioned that a new ExLibris Users of North America (ELUNA) Regional User Group (RUG) – Eastern Canada has been established. The group will be comprised of institutions from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador. Members of OCUL are all ExLibris customers and therefore eligible to attend RUG meetings, even if they aren’t ELUNA members.Next meeting: July 6
