Systems has run into some difficulties configuring the complex security precautions used on our public workstations in the new Windows 7 environment. It is still hoped that we will have a new Windows 7 based image out for the fall term. (Support for Windows XP will be discontinued in a little over a year from now.)As part of the campus external IT security review last year, several projects are underway to address security deficiencies. One project related to the implementation of a campus firewall will directly affect all library servers accessible from off campus. These servers will be placed in/connected to special publicly visible network areas only after they have met stringent requirements for security involving hardening procedures and a commitment to on-going timely maintenance and management. To do this is not trivial and will require a lot of planning. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2013.
A student on campus is lobbying for increased use of IBM’s World Community Grid on campus. He will be making a presentation to CTSC next week. The library has run this service for 5 years on our public workstations. When workstations are not being used by students, they are available to do distributed calculations for vetted humanitarian projects around the world. Participating computers combine together to form a virtual super computer for ‘free’ use by researchers that would otherwise cost millions of dollars to purchase. A version of this grid could be set up for UW researchers only as an incentive for adoption. If this gets backing by senior management, we may be installing this on staff computers as well. There are a few configuration issues that would need to be resolved first.
4. Move of Staff Accounts & Workstations into the Nexus Domain
The library is scheduled to have its staff workstations migrated by IST staff from ADS to NEXUS starting late September through mid-October (about 3 weeks in total). It will take about 30 minutes to complete each workstation. The library staff member must be available for some of this time to login to their system. As a part of this move, staff files will no longer be stored locally on their hard drive. They will instead now go to a campus network drive and be backed up by IST. This will allow the library to eventually get out of the backup business. However, there is currently a 10 GB limit for each user on the network drive. Systems has identified 38 staff members that currently exceed this amount and would like to work with individuals during the summer to clean up their systems. It is expected that most of these files will be related to pictures and music that have accidently ended up in the wrong directory. Accommodations can be made for those staff that still exceed the quota but this will be determined on a case by case basis. Systems will speak to managers who have staff that exceed the quota to make arrangements for clean-up.5. Library Review - Update
A special Library Managers meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 25, 2012 to discuss the Library Review next steps.Nancy and others are working on the next draft of the Library’s mission statement.

Annie provided background for the document, which lays out the mission statement, guiding principles and standards whereby we can judge the content of material on the web. The group started to review the document and had the opportunity to ask questions.Annie will revise the document based on comments made at this meeting and send a new draft to the Managers for further discussion on July 25th.
