Systems Department

Policy: Library-Supplied Software for Home Use

(reviewed by Library Managers, October 9, 2001)

The Systems Dept. supplies software for use by Library staff members on their home computers in the following instances:

· IST has paid for a campus license which includes home use by UW staff
· The software is freeware distributed by the IST Dept. on the "UW Home CD"
· The software is required for work that must be performed from home (e.g. some Systems staff members are required to launch and monitor overnight and weekend processes from home)

Software currently supplied for home use:

1. Microsoft Office (97 or 2000 Pro version)

The campus license permits installation on a home PC or laptop to qualified faculty and staff [i.e. those who have Microsoft Office software on a university-owned machine which is used by that individual at least 80% of the time]. The same version used at work or an earlier version may be installed.

2. UW Home CD (a range of freeware & software provided by IST)

The UW Home CD includes software for which IST has paid for licenses for home use by UW faculty, staff & students (e.g. Norton AntiVirus, WinZip) and a variety of freeware.
For a complete list of titles included see: http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/cs/homecd.htm

The UW Home CD is available for purchase from the Computing Help and Information Place (MC 1052) at a cost of $15. The Systems Dept. will loan, at no charge, a copy of a similar CD customized for Library staff for home installation.

For all Library-distributed software, the Systems Dept. is responsible for ensuring that licensing restrictions are complied with and that any registration documentation required is completed and submitted to IST (e.g. for Office, the "University of Waterloo Site Licensed Software: Microsoft Authorization Certificate" must be completed).

Documentation, such as user manuals, is not provided.

Support for home installation or software use is not provided.
