Subject: Archive- and restore- issues regarding the Library Website

Please note that pursuant to the adoption of an Archival policy for the Library Website two copies of the /libweb directory have been burned to CD. This preserves a snapshot of the Library Website (both the public- and staff-web components) as of January 7, 2002. This will be repeated once a year and upon request.

Please note the following:

·        The CD backup of the Library web-site contains both the htdocs directory (the directory containing your HTML documents and images) and the cgi-bin directory (containing scripts used on the site)

·        The CD backup does NOT include personal web-areas (those documents you keep in the public_html directory of your personal account). However ALL file-space on library.uwaterloo.ca is backed up to tape nightly on the campus HOOVER machine and is available instantaneously for restore purposes for up to 4 months.

·        The CD backup is intended as a historical record of the site. Because of its size and media it is not meant as a casual source of reference or file-restoration except under extreme circumstances. It is a single compressed file of about 600 megabytes in size and requires significant file-management to restore.

·        Two copies of the Library Web-site directory were burned. One will be stored remotely. Fire- and theft-proof containers will be ordered and a small storage & retrieval procedure will be setup. Details to come!

Please note that any of your files on library.uwaterloo.ca, including personal and corporate pages, are available instantaneously for recovery and comparison via the HOOVER backup system. Please see these instructions:

http://library/staff/systems/recover.html

to see how you can recover files from the HOOVER tape system at anytime. If you have difficulties or questions with regards to these instructions please contact the Library System Help Desk at ext. 2405. Because all of the files are backed up users are strongly encouraged to delete duplicate files and outdated files according to the Archival Policy cited above.

Finally, it was noted in the Web4Lib news group that there is a site that keeps a fairly comprehensive archive site of Web pages online at:

http://www.archive.org

Users may find this site useful in comparing the development of Library web pages over time. The Web Operational Management group has observed that the backup depth varies from time to time and stresses that it should not be relied on for file backup purposes or as a resource authorized by the Library. On the other hand it is an excellent casual tool to research web-site developments over the years -- one can see how the Philosophy discipline pages have evolved since 1998:

Please contact any member of the Web Operations Management Group if you have any questions. Thank you
