Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of March 13, 2001
2:00 - 4:00 pm, Porter Conference Room

Present: Chris Gray, Linda Hastings, Esther Millar (Recorder), Bill Oldfield, Marina Wan (Facilitator), Charles Woods

  1. Approval of notes from the meeting on Feb. 20, 2001
    Approved as distributed.

  2. Review of agenda
Since Linda needed to leave at 2:30 pm, "Webpage for site maintainers" was moved up after "Javascript on homepage to include Netscape 6."
The following agenda items were deferred to the next meeting:
    • Ownership in the cgi bin area
    • www & staffweb groups
    • More on training material

  3. Javascript on homepage to include Netscape 6
Chris has already developed a home page that solves the problems with Netscape 6 and has been testing it for a couple of months. He will create a redirect statement to send Netscape 6 users to the javascript version and group testing of the redirect statement and new home page will begin. We anticipate that the updated versions can be mounted in about two weeks.

Marina will send a message to Mark Haslett, Susan Routliffe, and Mary Stanley outlining how we would like to proceed on this issue.

  4. Web page for site maintainers
    See: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/webmaint/
Send further suggestions for the page to Linda.

  5. Statistics
    See: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/webops/
    stats.html

Bill demonstrated this proposal utilizing the IST supported package of wwwstats. While this would be the least labour-intensive method for compiling statistics, it would still require several weeks of work to get it up and running. In order to determine whether this method would meet the needs of staff requiring web statistics, we agreed to survey our staff to discern what kind of statistics are required.

Chris volunteered to compile a draft survey. Send your suggested questions to him.

  6. TUG Navbar
Pages that are created as the result of a program (e.g., pages generated from a search on a TUG page), do not have access to the server-side include statements. As a result, the correct navbar is not always being displayed. When searching E-journals and selecting a "New Search" from the top or bottom of the results page, the navigation bar for Waterloo or TUG appears at the top of the page instead of the library specific navigation bar. Bill will develop a solution to correct the problem.

  7. Standards & procedures in web maintenance
    See: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/standards/
Review this document for next meeting.
Also, install and try out the validation plug-in for Dreamweaver. Bill will e-mail instructions.

  8. Response to questionnaire on Dreamweaver training
Charles reviewed the results of our survey. He will compile these results into an e-mail message which can later be sent to webmaint-l and the IST trainers.

Group members are asked to consider what kinds of mechanisms can be put into place to address the questions and concerns raised in the questionnaire. Bring your ideas to the next meeting.

  9. More on site wide maintenance procedures
Esther ran synchronize (get newer files from remote) two weeks after the initial download was completed. The process took 40 minutes; 331 files were updated. The files that actually took most of the time to bring down to her system were files generated for statistics purposes. She encountered the same error messages as last time and, therefore, needed to monitor the process.

  10. Proxy Help
Item was deferred to the next meeting.

  11. Next Meeting
Tuesday, March 27; 2-4 pm; Porter Conference Room 428.
(Note: Davis was booked, so we'll meet in Porter again.)
