Web Operational Management Group

Minutes of the Meeting of March 27, 2001
2:00 - 3:30 pm, Porter Conference Room

Present: Chris Gray, Linda Hastings, Esther Millar (Recorder), Bill Oldfield (Facilitator), Charles Woods
Regrets: Marina Wan

  1. Approval of minutes from the meeting on March 3, 2001
    Approved as distributed.

  2. Agenda Review
    Agenda established as:
    • Netscape 6 update
    • Statistics survey
    • TUG Navigation Bar update
    • Dreamweaver training survey
    • Upgrade from Dreamweaver 3 to 4 (including Dreamweaver extension for validating files)
    • ownership in the cgi bin area & www and staffweb groups

  3. Netscape 6 update
Testing did not reveal any problems, so Chris and Linda will coordinate their tasks to allow for the changeover on Wednesday morning. Chris will notify our group when this has been completed so we can do a final check to ensure all is in working order. Linda will add an item to "What's New?" explaining that our home page is now Netscape 6 compatible and with a note that the text only version is still available (providing the URL).

Charles has a specialized version of the home page with links to the backup catalogue at Laurier for those times when the system goes down on a weekend. This page must be updated as well each time the "What's News?" menu changes. To streamline maintenance, Chris and Linda will test the possibility of placing the "What's New?" category into a server-side include statement.

  4. Statistics Survey
Thank you to Chris for preparing the draft survey. After further discussion the group decided that instead of a lengthy survey, our first step should be to determine how much interest and need there is for statistics in the Library. Chris will write a brief memo addressed to LibAdminPlus and webmaint-l that will solicit information on what kinds of statistics are needed and how they are used.

  5. TUG Navbar Update
Bill has prepared an interim solution that takes care of part of the problem. The search results page still has the TUG logo at the top of the page, but when selecting "New Search" the proper library-specific navigation bar is displayed.

Bill will send another memo to George Loney and Don Hamilton asking them to test his solution at their sites. When Bill gets their confirmation that all is in working order, he will place his solution into production.

  6. Response to questionnaire on Dreamweaver training
Charles compiled the results of the questionnaire. He will send these results to the webmaint-l group. Since Marina has been the liaison with the IST trainers, we will ask her to send the results to them on her return.
Group members will consider what kinds of mechanisms can be put into place to address the questions and concerns raised in the questionnaire.

  7. Upgrade from Dreamweaver 3 to 4
We agreed to upgrade from Dreamweaver 3 to Dreamweaver 4. Chris will arrange with Carl in Systems. Esther noted that Dreamweaver 4 seems to freeze her system oftener than the earlier versions. Chris will check Macromedia's web site for any patches that should be included as part of the installation.

The HTML 4.01 Transitional DTD validation plug-in will be installed at the same time. We will introduce it to the webmaint-l group as part of our web standards and procedures that will incorporate how it works and guidelines for its use.

  8. cgi-bin area and www and staffweb groups
The cgi-bin area is currently assigned to the www group. Charles will create a new group called webcgi for this area. Membership will include: cpgray, wroldfie, mlmwan, wcwoods, cjewell, jrparrot.

The htdocs directory currently belongs to the www group. Charles will change this to the webmaint group.

When these changes are complete he will delete the www group and staffweb group since they are no longer needed.

  9. Next Meeting
Tuesday, April 10, 2001; 2-4 pm; Porter Conference Room 428.
Main agenda item: Standards & procedures in web maintenance
Charles will send the URL for some innovative pages Kevin Rampersad is creating.
