Minutes of the Meeting of April 10, 2001
2:00 - 4:00 pm, Porter Conference Room

Present: Chris Gray, Esther Millar (Recorder), Bill Oldfield, Marina Wan Facilitator), Charles Woods
Regrets: Linda Hastings

  1. Approval of minutes from the meeting on March 27, 2001
    Approved as distributed.

  2. Agenda Review

  3. Progress Reports
    1. Netscape 6 and "What's New?"
Linda will put up the "What's New?" message tomorrow morning.
The experiment to utilize a server-side include statement for the "What's New?" area not only worked well, but makes it easier to maintain. This method is now being used on the current home page and will be incorporated into the specialized version of the home page that is used when the system goes down on a weekend.
    2. Statistics requirements
Chris will e-mail his memo asking for feedback on requirements for web statistics to LibAdminPlus and webmaint-l.
    3. TUG navbar display & E-journals
Bill has implemented the decisions made at our last meeting.
The TUG Ejournals Group conducted a Web-based survey of its user group to determine what improvements to make to the site. One of the results of this survey is the decision to use Zope to provide improved search capabilities. In addition to providing better searching, Zope will also handle the navbar issue nicely.
    4. Questionnaire on Dreamweaver training
Charles has sent the results of the questionnaire to webmaint-l.
Marina will send the results to the IST trainers.
    5. Dreamweaver Upgrade
Marina will send a memo to Linda Teather and Carl Nagel with official notification that we have approved the upgrade to Dreamweaver 4. She will also stipulate that we do not foresee the need for any additional training due to this upgrade.
Marina will also send a memo to webmaint-l notifying them that we will be upgrading to Dreamweaver 4. The first upgrades will be made to staff in the ISR departments at the same time as their workstations are being upgraded.
Re: manual for Dreamweaver 4. Chris will review what is available.
    6. cgi-bin and www and staffweb groups
A webcgi group has been established for the cgi area. The www and staffweb groups no longer exist. To review actual group membership do: more /etc/group/ at the unix prompt.

  4. Standards and procedures in web maintenance
    See: http://www.lib.uwaterloo.ca/staff/webops/
    standards/
Esther will incorporate the changes discussed:
    • recommend that the .html extension be used at all times; give instructions on how to set this under "Preferences"
    • recommend that tags appear in lower case; give instructions on how to set this under "Preferences"
    • refer staff to the W3C HTML online validator instead of WebLint
    • treat URLs as permanent; avoid moving files because links get broken; if really necessary, then leave a re-direct statement
    • Linda H. will provide colour suggestions that work well with our navigation bar
    • Esther will create templates using Dreamweaver
    • questions re: using the Transitional 4.01 DTD. Esther will check to see what problems are being identified.

  5. UNIX Netscape 4.73
Our top page is causing problems for UNIX Netscape 4.73. Chris will meet with Pat Matlock to see what problems are being encountered. At the same time he will also check out problems with Spires.

  6. TUGWEB issues
Charles will ouline the technical issues. Discussion will continue via e-mail and at our next meeting.
