Minutes of the Meeting of October 3, 2001
1:30 - 2:30 pm, Porter 407
Present: , Linda Hastings, Esther Millar (Recorder), Marina Wan (Facilitator), Charles Woods
Regrets: Chris Gray, Bill Oldfield
- Approval of minutes from the meeting on September 5, 2001
Approved with minor corrections.
- Agenda Review
Accepted as distributed.
- Business Arising:
2.8. Open Text Software - Charles will add Open Text Indexing to the checklist for programs that need to be checked to ensure they are working.
6. Decision on Contents of the Top Page
Susan Routliffe will consider which group should be responsible for making top page content decisions. Web Ops did not feel it is the appropriate group since only Marina is involved in the public service area. Until a decision is made, we will continue to take our recommendations to Susan for final decision.
- Linkbot Report
Esther's message was approved. She will re-run the Report and send out the message as soon as possible.
As a result of reviewing some error logs, the question arose regarding the use of favicon.ico and robots.txt.
If you have installed a favicon on your server, then every time someone bookmarks your site your own icon will be displayed in their favorite's folder instead of the generic I.E. symbol. Neither Guelph nor Laurier libraries use favicon. We also discovered that it only works with version 5 of Internet Explorer. The recommended method of installing the icon is to place it in every directory on your site. We decided not to implement the use of favicon.ico on the Library Web Site.
The robots.txt file is used to block external access to the site. Guelph uses it to block indexing of their test sites by external search engines. We felt this issue is worth pursuing and deferred discussion until Bill and Chris can be present.
- Issues on Archiving
With a few minor revisions, the group approved Marina's report. Marina will forward it to the Digital Library Coordination Committee.
- Report on CNAPG's top page design
Linda reported that she will be meeting with CNAPG tomorrow. Their current prototype does not conform to the UWinfo guidelines. In preparation for the meeting, Susant Routliffe sent out a message with links to UWinfo's guidelines and the Staff Web prototype page (which is based on UWinfo's guidelines).
Charles questioned whether the format of the UWinfo navigation bar would be easy for the novice user to use and update. Linda explained that the top bar being prepared for the Staff Web has been simplified, and a format is being selected that will be easy for everyone to use. Information has been placed into tables instead of layers whenever possible. The group is recommending that the top navigation bar be consistent across the entire site and be incorporated as a server-side include statement that can be edited by a core group of maintainers. A sidebar with links specific to the particular group or committee can be included as a separate server-side include statement. The sidebar would consist of text, not images, thus making it easy for anyone to update.
- Report on Staff Web Review
Our prototype is receiving positive comments. We are beginning to prepare our report.
Re: access to private area. Marina is still looking into using both IP and password control.
- Next Meeting
